EASTER CELEBRATIONS: The week started here in Abbeyfeale with the pilgrimage Walk to the Well on Palm Sunday in beautiful sunshine, included Confessions on Monday evening, continued with the Mass of the Last Supper on Thursday night, the visit of Bishop Donal Murphy on Good Friday, the youth club re – creation of the Stations of the Cross later that day, the Easter Vigil Holy Saturday night and finished with the Mass of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. It involved weeks of rehearsal by the senior and youth choirs who excelled and helped enormously in our involvement in the ceremonies. The preparation by the readers, input from the children who will be receiving First Holy Communion and Confirmation this spring and their parents and teachers, decoration of the church by the altar society and a lot of work from our three priests, our parish sisters and our parish clerks also helped to make the week so meaningful. While we in Abbeyfeale were celebrating the death and resurrection of our Saviour the Franciscan Sisters of Siessen posted: “Was informed that the Salesian priest, Fr.Tom who was kidnapped by ISIS from the Missionaries of Charity Home in Yemen is being tortured and is going to be crucified on Good Friday. Now the Washington Times has reported the savage murder has been confirmed at the Easter Vigil Mass by Cardinal Christoph Schonborn of Vienna. Fr. Father Tom Uzhunnalil was allegedly seized when four armed militants stormed an old people’s home in Aden in Yemen on March 4, killing 16 people including 4 nuns who were members of the order of Mother Teresa. The late Fr. Tom was a member of the Silesian order in Bangalore, India.
DONAL MURPHY RECORDS A NEW ALBUM: Well-known Irish Trad band ‘Four men and a Dog’ are launching a new Album in St Johns Arts Theatre, Listowel on Thursday, April 7. This is to celebrate 25 years on the road. The band features Abbeyfeale accordion player, Donal Murphy, Cathal & Stephen Hayden banjo & fiddles, Kevin Doherty vocals/guitar & frontman Gino Lupari bodhran/vocals. FLEADH BY THE FEALE: Apart from the road signs now appearing around Abbeyfeale, people all over Limerick & beyond are aware of the upcoming 22nd Fleadh by the Feale. Preparations are well under way as the Fleadh each year offers a comprehensive range of events including song, dance, live music, storytelling to competitions which are of a very high standard, in fact one of the best festivals around. The committee is working away on finalising the schedule to ensure the delivery of yet again a highly successful weekend. Anyone who has ever been to Abbeyfeale for the weekend will know that there is something to suit everyone, of every age and interest. The Fleadh committee works hard to maintain and further develop the love of Irish music, song, dance and storytelling and throughout the weekend and town, there are opportunities for people to participate in the Fleadh or indeed just sit back and relax and soak up the atmosphere in any of the venues or on our Main Street and beautiful Square. Our young artists in our national schools are currently working on their art work for the annual competition sponsored by Glor na Gael. Every year the competition gets more difficult to judge with the quality of work being submitted. The presentation for this year’s event will take place in our wonderful library on Thursday April 28 at 7:30pm, followed by just a taste of the musical talent that exists in our community when our young musicians strike up their instruments. This year the art competition has the theme of Irish music and the Rising, enabling us to mark this historic year. We anticipate some creative and interesting art pieces. The committee is very well supported by the community and local businesses and is year on year grateful for the support and financial sponsorship. With Mary Black and her Band headlining this year’s Celebrity Concert, it promises to be another great weekend. Mary Black needs no introduction; she is an artist who has been a key presence in the Irish music scene, here and abroad and has a litany of awards under her belt. She merges the love of her traditions and heritage with contemporary style and she comes to Abbeyfeale with her Down the Crooked Road concert. JAPANESE KNOTWEED IN ABBEYFEALE: This is an invasive species which is very prevalent on the banks of the Feale and on lands surrounding the river. It will outcompete every plant including broadleaf forestry in the long term. It damages roads, buildings and infrastructure. It is extremely costly for both the environment and the economy. The roots can spread up to 9 metres out from the visible plant and 3 metres below. Do not dig, cut or disturb if you come across it as this will only aid it to spread as both knots on the stem and any small amount of root will shoot again. Timing in tackling it is crucial and optimum control with Glyphosate will be achieved by treatment from flowering in August/September but before die back. RE – ENACTMENT AT GLENQUIN CASTLE: On Sunday, April 24 Con Greaney from Newcastlewest has organised a re-enactment of the gathering of 300 volunteers who came there from 11 villages and as far away as Milford in North Cork on Easter Sunday 1916. Under instruction from IRB man Charles Wall of Dromcollogher they were to come prepared with a blanket, three days rations and a firearm. The plan was to march to Barnagh to take over the train which would have the arms that came into Banna the night before. Now, 100 years later their ancestors will answer the call and come to Glenquin to remember the bravery of family members. A plaque will be erected at the Castle to mark the centenary of the heroism of ordinary people who did extraordinary things. An invitation has gone out to people to join the march to Glenquin. The CD which was made by four Traveller men -Willie, Danny, Christy and Ned Harty – was supported by the West Limerick Primary Health Care Project for Travellers. VISIT OF THE ICON OF OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP: The Redemptorists and St. John’s Cathedral are celebrating 150 years of devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. LIMERICK WOODTURNERS SEMINAR: Limerick and District Chapter of The Irish Woodturning Guild celebrates the 25th anniversary of its founding in 1991. DAY TRIP TO WATERFORD: On Bank Holiday Monday, May 2 next, a coach will depart from the Market Yard, Newcastle West at 8.30a.m. There will be a stop for Breakfast in Mitchelstown before continuing along via the very scenic Vee Gap in the Knockmealdown Mountains to the seaside town of Dungarvan. In the afternoon we will travel along the Coast Road for a few miles and then transfer from the coach to ‘shank’s mare’ and return to Dungarvan along the brand new Waterford Greenway. This route has been constructed by Waterford Council along an old railway route replete with viaducts and a tunnel; not to mention stunning views.
A full four course evening meal will be provided before returning home.

Leaving NCW at 9.30am. On our way to our hotel we will be calling to see St. Mel’s newly refurbished cathedral in Longford. On Monday we will board our bus directly after an early breakfast to travel to Armagh where we will visit both St. Patrick’s Cathedrals, the Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic. Also we intend visiting Cardinal Tómas O’Fiaich Memorial Library which is close by. Tuesday we will travel to Monaghan to see the Cavan Crystal premises. During the day we will be touring and in the evening in our hotel dancing on Sunday night, Monday night we will have our special entertainment and sing song, Tuesday dancing. We have a full and interesting itinerary. All those who have paid their deposit can pay the balance now all monies to be in no later than Friday, April 18.
