WELCOME HOME: The town was en fete on Wednesday evening when 14 year old Kori Goad and her father Damien returned home from the World Kickboxing Competitions in Italy with a Gold Medal for Kori and a Silver one for her father.   Kori’s mom Maria is the proprietor of the hairdressing salon Tangles on Main St. and her grandmother Nell Mae O’Grady is from Meenkilly.  Well done to you both.  It was a great achievement more especially for a 14 year old girl and Abbeyfeale and environs are so proud of you both.

JOBS ON OFFER IN ADARE:  Adare Manor Recruitment Open Days will be held on Thursday July 13 from 8am – 8pm, Saturday July 15 from 10am – 6pm and Monday July 17 from 8am – 8pm.  Up to 300 people will be employed in the Manor when it opens in the autumn.

SUMMER TIME IS COMPETITION TIME:  The Tidy Towns committee in conjunction with Abbeyfeale Community Council are running a competition this June and July for Best Shop Front and Most Improved Shop Front.  Trophies have been sponsored by Fitall/Sigma Signs and Sheehys Hardware.  There will be a voucher for the overall winner in each category.

FREE COMPUTER AND INTERNET TRAINING COURSE: Digital Skills for Citizens computer and internet training at Abbeyfeale library beginning on Friday, July 21 from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. The course will run every Friday for five weeks and it aims to give beginners the confidence and skills required to benefit from the internet. The course will cover internet security, emails, search engines and websites, accessing government services, conducting everyday transactions, shopping, banking and security, and voice and video calls online. Digital Skills is free to all participants and beginners are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops or tablet PCs if available. MATINEE SUNDAYS:  The Big Friendly Giant is the next film in the children’s matinee season at the Glórach.  It will be shown on Sunday, July 23 at 2.30pm – book your seat on 087 1383940.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

SUMMER VISITOR:  Delighted to welcome home Bishop Micheal Lenihan for his summer break.  He said Mass in Abbeyfeale recently and in a pithy sermon talked about hospitality and how you know when you’re welcome to a house – when they open the door fully rather than half way and if they turn off the television in the corner!

BANK OF IRELAND BRANCH WILL BE SELF SERVICE:  There will no cash services offered in the Branch from August 16.  Self-service banking and financial advice will be on offer each week day.  If you need coin, cash exchange or foreign exchange you will have to go to a neighbouring branch ie Newcastlewest or Listowel between 10am -12.30pm or to Tralee or Killarney for service from 10am – 4pm.  Foreign exchange is available at the Post Office and the Credit Union.

CINEMA NIGHTS AT THE GLORACH:  The Quiet Man was shown to a nearly full theatre last Wednesday night and everyone there was full of praise for the venue and the massive screen and the sound quality and more especially the ambience.  Next cinema night is August 2 when Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman will be the classic film offering.   Reserve your seat on 087 1383940.

CROAGH PATRICK:  Reek Sunday takes place on the last Sunday in July each year. In 2017 Reek Sunday takes place on Sunday July 30.  Please note that there are changes in the Mass times this year, with Masses being celebrated on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you are travelling, please note the following:  All pilgrims should heed the instructions of the Mountain Rescue Teams, Order of Malta and An Gárda Síochána at all times.Pilgrims should follow the instructions and guidelines issued by Mayo Mountain Rescue

CEILI:  A Charity Ceili is being held in Knockaderry Resource Centre on August 11 at 9.30pm.  Music is by the Striolan Ceili band. A raffle will be held with spot prizes galore. GLÓRACH NEWS:  There are plans to hold a Musical Theatre Summer Camp with Jo Jordan of Theatrix Theatre School August 21-25 from 11am – 1pm.  Places are limited so book today on 087 6104224.  The Cinema Club launched their Summer Matinee Season with a very successful screening of The Lion King on Sunday last, thereafter matinees will take place every second Sunday with The Jungle Book screening on Sunday, July 9 at 2.30pm.  T

‘THE MORE MONEY THAT’S IN; THE MORE YOU WIN’:    West Limerick 102fm will be holding a fundraising 50/50 Draw with the raffle taking place weekly live on air in the West Limerick 102fm. Studios.  Each week the pot from the sale of the raffle tickets will be divided equally between the person whose ticket is drawn and the station. LAUNCH OF NEW CD:  Donie Lyons, singer and musician has a CD on sale in Ann Lyons, Main St.  The official launch will take place in Abbeyfeale in the autumn.

GLÓRACH NEWS:  PRO Lorcan Curtin says; “Thanks so much to all who supported our screening of The Quiet Man and made it such a special night last Wednesday.  A big thanks also to Maurice McElligott for donating the film posters that give the foyer such a cinematic feel on these nights.  Next up is Casablanca in August.  If you missed our highly successful play The Highest House on the Mountain in January, we will be doing a shortened version of it in John B Keane’s pub in Listowel on this Thursday at 9.30 pm, beidh fáilte roimh gach éinne.”

SEISIÚN IN TEMPLEGLANTINE:  All those in the locality who enjoy a good night of Irish traditional entertainment will welcome the return of the weekly Comhaltas  Seisiún show at the Devon Inn every Thursday night at 8.30pm.  The show consists of top quality music, song, dance and story provided by a talented group of artistes, many of whom have won All Ireland honours.  The traditional show is aimed at both locals and visitors and is very enjoyable.  Towards the end of the programme of entertainment there is an informal segment where members of the audience may perform if they so wish.

ST.  ITA’S FAITH CAMP: Registration for Faith Camp is taking place in St

Mary’s Boys School on Tuesday, July 18 from 7-8pm and on Wednesday, July 19 from 8-9pm. The annual St. Ita’s Faith Camp takes place from Tuesday, August 1 – Friday, August 4 2017.   Confirmation children especially welcome. We are asking families to host our visiting volunteers this year. We need bed and breakfast accommodation for the volunteers who come from afar – all other meals will be supplied at the School. We are very grateful for your generosity.  We welcome any person who is 15 years or over to volunteer for the camp as much help is needed during our 4 days.  Contact Martina 087 2788834 or Lorraine 086 3765751.

FARM SAFETY WEEK:  Farm Safety Week will take place this year from July 24- 28. The campaign will focus on a different risk each day. Farmers will be encouraged to take some time during the week to assess the safety of routine tasks. The message for Farm Safety Week is that farm safety is a lifestyle not a slogan.

GRAVEYARD CLEAN:  Reilig Ide Naofa Graveyard Mass will take place on Thursday, August 17 @ 7.30pm. Clean up takes place every Tuesday, if you are available some evening please call, all help is greatly appreciated as the graveyard is quite large and needs constant weeding. So come along and join the group. All are welcome.

YOUTH MINISTRY TRAINING: The Youth Ministry Team in the Diocese will be delivering a Youth Ministry Training Programme beginning in September 2017. This course is aimed at adults (aged 21+) volunteers or professionals who have an interest in working with children or young people in a parish or school setting.  The aim of the training is to train people to deliver youth ministry programmes and events within their own parishes, to empower and encourage people at local level to take on leadership roles in the area of youth ministry.   To offer practical support and resources as well as grounding people in the theory and theology of youth ministry.  The course will be held on Thursday nights from September to December 2017 beginning on September 21.  Weekend Residential Retreat October 14/15. SINGING NIGHT IN PHILIP ENRIGHTS:    The monthly singing night at The Ramble Inn takes place on the first Friday of every month.

ABBEYFEALE COMMUNITY ALERT: All those who booked seats for the Summer Outing to Dingle are asked to pay Joint Treasurer Kathleen Collins, Convent St., before July 15.   If you are travelling in Europe this summer be sure to apply to the HSE for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).  You can apply by post or online, further details on the HSE website.  The card entitles the carrier to the same access to healthcare as locals when travelling in an EU or EEA country.  Defibrillators in Abbeyfeale are located at the Search and Rescue Headquarters and also at Fr. Casey’s, the Rugby Club and the Soccer grounds.  Should you require one in an emergency contact Christy Kelleher 087 7452110.   Should you be affected by or witness an anti-social event – on the street, in your property, at your business, in the Town Park etc. -  it is recommended that you call the 24 hour line in Newcastlewest  on 069 20650 to log your complaint.   You can also log your complaint on the 24 hr free phone no 1800 283064. This type of low level nuisance crime needs to be reported so that the Gardai can be made aware that it is happening.  So, if someone walks out in front of your car, or you see someone in your garden or on your wall make the call.  We have been asked to remind people that once they reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 then they are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert but there will be a monitoring fee to be paid yearly to the installing company which is currently in the region of €65.  If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a monthly fee of approx. €12 on top of the monitoring fee.  If you are a victim of or have witnessed domestic abuse then log onto whatwouldyoudo.ie We constantly update our FB page with local alerts and information on keeping safe so do keep an eye on that. FOOD CLOUD: West Limerick Resources is delighted to announce that we are working to support the Food Cloud Initiative in the West Limerick Area. Food Cloud is a simple yet ingenious idea whereby working with local supermarkets for the aim of reducing food waste and restoring community spirit based on shared food. We would like to hear from Community Groups or Charities in the area who would be in a position to support this initiative, by receiving the food donations for their own work or indeed for further distribution within the community. PREPARATION FOR WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES:  On Thursday, July 13 a one day conference entitled, Let’s Talk Family, Let’s Be Family. The Conference takes place in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. This event is part of the preparations for the World Meeting of Families.  The diocese  is delighted to welcome Cardinal Christoph Schonborn, Archbishop of Vienna,  as the  key-note speaker.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED:  World Meeting of Families in Dublin 2018.   Would you like to help organise this amazing event?  We would be delighted to have you! We need a diverse mix of people with various skills and experiences to ensure the success of this event. Whatever your reasons or your focus, we know your skills and experience can help us and we would welcome your support in helping us create a successful, historic and joyous event. WMOF2018 volunteers will be assigned from a wide variety of roles to match their skills and experience. Tasks may include  supporting information and welcome centres, transport hubs and event services at the major WMOF2018 venues. A volunteer must be a resident of the island of Ireland at the time of application. Be over 18 years of age as of 1st January 2018. Be sensitive and respectful of our Catholic ethos. Must apply for Garda vetting as part of the application process in line with the procedure laid down. Be available to volunteer for a minimum of four consecutive days  between 18th and 29th August 2018. (Shifts will last up to 8 hours and you will be given adequate rest time). Be available for three mandatory training sessions, starting before the end of 2017.  The training sessions will be on Saturdays and will last 3 to 5 hours. They will cover Induction, Job and Venue Specific  Training. Advance notice will be given of dates. Please note that registration is handled online. If you do not have access to email or a computer, please ask family members or friends for access to their computer and for assistance with the  volunteer application process.
