SEPTEMBER AT THE GLÓRACH: First up on Thursday, September 12 is Limerick singer-songwriter Emma Langford. Emma received widespread critical acclaim for her debut album Quiet Giant in 2017 and last year won the RTE Radio One ‘Best Emerging Artist’ award at their inaugural folk awards. A concert not to be missed, Emma will be ably supported on the night by Trevor Sexton. Two days later, we switch genres, but the level of high quality musicianship will remain constant as Leroy Troy and his Hillbilly Trio come to town. Having wowed international audiences, they make their debut at the Glórach and suffice to say it’s rare a bluegrass group of this calibre come to Abbeyfeale so make sure to mark Saturday, September 14 in your diary. NATIONAL CULTURE NIGHT AT THE GLÓRACH; Our National Culture Night is slated for Friday, September 20. Glórach will play its part by hosting a Scoraiocht, which we’re describing as an opportunity for local people to meet up, make merry and be entertained by the cream of local entertainers and performers. We invite you to soak up the energy, the sensuality, the spectacle and the sólás na beatha that is the very essence of Irish Dance, Music, Song and Drama. In last week’s article, we promised further insight into what’s in store for you; well, here goes, you can experience an enactment of the drama that was the Meenaheala creamery workers strike that took place in the early part of the last century. You can dip your toes into a bygone era when David Browne introduces you to the characters in John B’s play, Sive, through his much-admired rendition of “The Road to Abbeyfeale”. And, through Amanda Colbert’s singing of “The Old Stone Wall”, a song written by Klondyke Lyons, a travelling showman, around 1905, you can sense, even at this remove, that basic need for friendship, camaraderie and perhaps escapism from what were difficult times. There’ll be plenty of lively songs as well and more on those next week when we’ll, also, tell you what the Templeglantine Troupers have in store for you.All Culture Night events offer free admission, but Glórach will go a stage further and offer its patrons a glass or a cup of something along with a little food to enhance the evening’s experience. Please note that this fee has increased by €6 and is payable in a lump sum each year after year one. COMMUNITY ALERT: Do not give personal details over the phone to anyone and don’t engage with callers who want to fix your phone or your computer or sort out a difficulty with your bank account. You’ve all heard the saying ‘a fool and his money are easily parted’, well if you give out personal details then expect to part. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72. Please note that this fee has increased by €6 and is payable in a lump sum each year after year one. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one.
