GLÓRACH BINGO: Glorious weather ensured a large turnout at the GAA grounds in Abbeyfeale last Sunday for our weekly drive-in Bingo. The effervescent Tom Madigan took up the mantle once again of calling out the numbers, and any despondency felt by our Kerry contingent after the match on Saturday quickly receded over the course of a memorable afternoon. Once again, thanks to all involved who have ensured the safe and smooth running of this event, and to our loyal patrons. Familiar faces and newcomers all welcome at the usual starting time of 2 pm each Sunday.

PAT FEELEY ON LYRIC FM: With obvious distractions for many Limerick people over the last few weeks, some may have missed the compilation of some of Pat Feeley’s memorable programmes that appeared on Lyric FM. If you did, simply go to the RTE Lyric FM Player site; the three programmes broadcast can be accessed under ‘The Lyric Feature’.

COMMUNITY ALERT: There is not a day but the phone rings and it’s an automated message urging you to press button 1 or to divulge your PIN number for your bank account or your PPS number. Ignore everything, ring the Garda Station if you are concerned but whatever you do tell your business to no one on the phone. If you’re on Face Book don’t be telling people you’re going on holidays either. If you are 65, you live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or if you spend long periods of the day on your own then, because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72. There may be some confusion over the word free - the equipment which costs in the region of €400 is provided free of charge by Pobal as is the first year of monitoring but after that you will be charged by the installing company for the monitoring. I have not included the phone numbers of the committee in this notice but if you want to get a panic button then ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station on 068 30010 and they will contact one of us. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one with a deposit of 6 months payable on the day of installation. Then, in year two you will also receive a bill for the monitoring fee so in year one the bill will be €90 and in year two and every other year after it will €162 approx. If you wish you can arrange a direct debit and pay this amount off monthly. Committee members are Michael O’Kelly N.T., Chairman Seamus Stack, Secretary Mossie Gleeson, Assistant Treasurer Kathleen Collins, Assistant Secretary Mary McArthur, John O’Sullivan, Billy Quirke N.T., Cllr.

PROLOGUE: “Keep your words soft and sweet because you don’t know the day you’ll have to swallow them”. Fr. Dan Lane. Sermon on World Communications Day.

DEATHS: We offer our sympathy to the family of Paddy Leahy, Banard whose funeral took place on Monday. To the family of Jer Roche, Caherhayes whose funeral took place on Tuesday. To the family of Michael (Mick Fox) Harnett, Knockadireen, Dromtrasna Collins whose funeral took place on Wednesday. May they rest in peace.

DRUG RELATED INTIMIDATION: Having heard of a case of Drug Related Intimidation locally I contacted the MidWest Regional Drugs and Alcohol Forum and received the following statement from Rionach who is a development Worker with the Forum. “ It is a criminal offence, and An Garda Siochana and the National Family Support Network highlighted this back in 2013, with the Drug Related Intimidation Reporting Programme. However, a lack of awareness of the programme, means that some family members can go without support, and some people (including workers in organisations) may be at a loss if a situation of drug related intimidation is disclosed to them. It is a very difficult situation that a person could find themselves in, through no action of their own. It may be, that they didn’t even know their family member was using substances. Whatever the circumstance, it can be isolating and heart breaking, and for that reason, it is important that people who find themselves in this situation know that there is support out there, and they are not alone. Drug Services can direct a family member towards a family support project or worker who can help them around the stress and strain of the circumstances where a family member is using substances (www.drugs.ie) and An Garda Siochana can support the family member in terms of their safety and security when faced with an incidence of drug related intimidation. There is a designated Garda Inspector allocated to Drug Related Intimidation in every county. Limerick: Detective Inspector Ronan McDonagh Henry Street Garda Station 061 212 400. Kerry: Inspector John Kelly Tralee Garda Station 066 7102300. It’s never too late to ask for help.

NATIONAL PLOUGHING ASSOCIATION: The NPA executive has announced the “difficult decision” it has made to cancel the 2021 trade exhibition this year. The World Ploughing Contest due to be held in Ireland to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the championships has also been cancelled.

CHURCHES REOPEN: Fr. Tony writes: The two-metre social distancing rule still applies. Stewards will direct you to the hand sanitizing stations and then to your seats. The seats will be clearly marked. Three individual people from different households to a seat. Families from the same household may sit together. The stewards will direct you to Holy Communion and at the end of Mass we are asking people to exit the church gradually and safely. Should the church be filled parishioners will be able to hear Mass in the car park through the Car Park Radio. Tune your car radio to 107FM. For Holy Communion we ask you to remain in your car and Holy Communion will be brought to you. We ask you to follow the guidance of the stewards at all times. The church will need to be cleaned thoroughly after each time that it is used. The cleaning of the building after each Mass is essential to maintain safety and prevent the spread of the virus. Please use sanitiser, available at entrances and exits to the church· Social Distancing must be adhered to at all times and please wear your mask for added safety. The Church will be divided into ‘pods’ (of no more than 50 persons in each), giving us welcome extra capacity· Each Section has its own entrance / exit route with strictly no movements between ‘pods’· The ‘Sign of Peace’ remains suspended for the moment and arrangements for Holy Communion, observing social distancing as they were last time· Should you find the capacity of the church has already been reached, you may park in the grounds and participate in our Mass through your car radio [107FM}But please remain in your car so that there is no congregating in the car park. Numbers for Weddings and Funerals are limited to 50. It is not in the power of the priest to change this. It is the ‘law of the land’, so please do not exceed or ask for exception. The current Mass schedule will remain in place for the summer months.

COMMUNITY ALERT: ‘An Garda Síochána uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems in its Garda Traffic Corps vehicles. ANPR uses optical character recognition technology to automatically read vehicle registration plates and is used in patrol cars by many police forces worldwide. The technology can read number plates at a rate of six per second on vehicles travelling up to 180km/h. ANPR systems also include a speed detection capability. This allows for the measuring of the speed of a vehicle travelling in front of a patrol vehicle. The video camera records on-the-scene evidence of speeding, and offences such as dangerous driving, crossing continuous white lines and breaking red lights. One of the main benefits of the system is that the plate recognition can run in the background while Gardaí are measuring speed or attending to other issues as demands dictate. All vehicles fitted with ANPR camera systems will be able to identify vehicles as being stolen, untaxed, suspect, cited as connected with terrorist suspects, crime groups, drug trafficking, people trafficking and/or persistent offending. The systems therefore make a significant contribution to the fight against serious and organised criminal activity. The planned nationwide roll out of ANPR in An Garda Síochána was completed in 2010. There are approximately 100 operational unit and are now fitted with 3G technology. ANPR vehicles are now deployed in every Garda Division, with the number of vehicles allocated in each division based on various criteria including the type of roads, the amount of motorways and geographic profile.’ Downloaded from www.garda.ie When you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or spend long periods of the day then, because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one with a deposit of 6 months payable on the day of installation.. Francis Foley, Catherine Daly, Maurice O’Connell, Assistant Treasurer Marian Harnett.

GLÓRACH NOTES: On Wednesday, January 3 we will be screening the 2015 film, Brooklyn. Based on the Colm Tóibín novel, and starring Saoirse Ronan, the film offers a wonderful snapshot of 1950s Ireland and the experience of a young emigrant to New York. The screening takes place at 8 pm and all are welcome. Later on in the month we will be having an International Concert on Thursday, January 18, with an array of fantastic musicians lined up for the night. On the drama front, rehearsals are well underway for the production of the Sam Cree play, Second Honeymoon. Presented by the Abbeyside players, under the direction of Merce Hobson, this comedy will have you rolling in the aisles with laughter when it takes to the Glórach Stage towards the end of February. For any queries or bookings don’t hesitate to call 0871383940.

PUBLIC PRESENTATION: Abbeyfeale Community Council (ACC) held a Public Presentation / Consultation on the Research undertaken to date and Proposed Plans for the Old Convent Building in Abbeyfeale at the Glórach Theatre in Abbeyfeale on Thursday, December 28 last.

Both Maurice OConnell and Trevor McCarthy Secretary of ACC began by giving a brief understanding of what Abbeyfeale Community Council was about as a Community Group and how it has evolved from an Association to a Company limited by Guarantee along with being awarded Charitable Status – all within 18 months on from initial inception. This was followed by several examples of funding secured and projects completed by ACC in and around Abbeyfeale over the past 12 months.. Both Maurice OConnell and Trevor McCarthy emphasized how important it is to realise that there are three very important aspects to this one project – the saving of an iconic building, the creating of jobs for Abbeyfeale and its wider Community and the ongoing growth within the local economy as a result of having such a project and new employment in place.

Maurice and Trevor then continued to explain the financial breakdown of both Renovation Costs and Expected Revenue. The overall cost of €3-€3.5 million to complete such a large scale project was seen as something never attempted before by anyone in Abbeyfeale. Maurice OConnell then explained that most of this funding would come from the larger Agencies but around 10% or €300,000 would need to be raised locally in order to show the Directors of these Funding Agencies that those living in and around the Abbeyfeale area are supportive of such a project but just as importantly that they have the foresight and the vision to understand the vast potential of the expected annual €600,000 to be generated from this site once it is completed.

ADULT LEARNING CENTRE ( OLD TECH): A Level 5 (Full Award) Course starting in January in Childcare early care and education practice at the Further Education & Training Centre, Mountmahon, Abbeyfeale. For further inquiries 068 31198.

A NEW RESPONSE TO ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR ( ASBO) Anti Social behaviour is when a person acts in a way that causes or, in the circumstances, is likely to cause someone harassment, significant or persistent alarm, distress, fear or intimidation, or impairs their use or enjoyment of their property in a significant or persistent way. Examples of anti social behaviour are intimidation, abusive or threatening behaviour and vandalism. If you are affected you should contact Abbeyfeale Garda Station 068 30010. The Gardai may issue a behaviour warning to the perpetrator, if they fail to obey the warning it may result in a behaviour order from the courts. Information taken from a public information leaflet published by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. Limerick County Council also operate a 24 hour free phone number 1800 283 064 dedicated for Anti Social Behaviour reporting.

BURGLARS THWARTED: This report from the press tells the story of the attempted burglary of Dennisons Solicitors on Main St., before Christmas: “Client confidentiality was most definitely in ‘safe keeping’ at a Co Limerick legal practice as burglars wasted an entire night in the run-up to Christmas trying to crack a 56-year-old safe, writes David Raleigh. In a case supporting the nostalgic notion that they don’t make them like they used to, an old Chubb safe, purchased by Jim Dennison Snr all the way back in 1961, proved too much for today’s criminals. In a scene almost straight from the ‘World’s Dumbest Criminals’ series, the burglars spent all of six hours battering away with kango hammers, nail bars and lump hammers, it has emerged, but to no avail. The old safe located on the Main Street, Abbeyfeale practice of Dennison Solicitors, stood strong during the all-night onslaught before the robbers finally gave up and fled the premises empty-handed before dawn. “They went straight for the safe. I’m not sure what they would have thought would be in it as we don’t keep cash on the premises. But it was a complete waste of time,” said James Dennison, who today runs the practice founded by his father. “They got nothing. They stayed hammering away for around six hours, we estimate.” “My father was old-school and held that an essential part of any legal firm is a safe to hold wills and title deeds. “He went all out when he bought this one. He went to London in 1961 to deal directly with Chubb, the makers of the best safes in the world. He specified a safe to bankers’ standard.” “My father’s uncle, the Late Jack Healy from Brosna installed the safe to the strict specifications set out by Chubb, which included building a concrete and steel reinforced room around the safe.” “The safe door dominates the reception in the legal firm, and it has held several thousands of client files over the years. The burglars must have expected a safe like that has to hold cash. “It doesn’t but even if it did, it seems to have stood the test of time.”It was an awful lot of effort to go away empty-handed.”

COMMUNITY ALERT: Please keep an eye on elderly neighbours, it need only be a telephone call or just dropping in for a few minutes on your way home from work but showing that you care could mean the world to someone. If you have been a victim of crime call the crime victims helpline on Freephone 116 006 between 10—5.30pm Monday to Friday. The minute you buy something in the line of electrical goods, machinery, bicycles, quads find the serial no. and record it even if it was only on a sticker on the inside door of a press. Muintir Na Tire have a log book for sale for just a fiver that you can use to make a record of all you possess and they are available from any member of Abbeyfeale Community Alert. If you see anything that makes you wonder if thieves are casing the area like a car that seems to be travelling around several times ring Abbeyfeale Station on 068 30010. If the Gardai on duty are out on patrol the call will be patched through to NCW who will call the car back to town. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company and this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80. If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65. If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56. This works out cheaper that the rent of a landline which is currently €25 per month. The installing company are required to provide identification on their equipment, their vans and their staff and before you admit anyone to your house you should ask for this identification. The company also offer a button which can be installed near the front and back doors for a once off payment – this is nothing to do with either Pobal or Abbeyfeale Community Alert and is just between the installing company and the client. The idea is that it offers extra security when answering the door. If you leave the house close windows, turn lights on and maybe invest in a timer for them. Now is the time to prepare for winter so make sure you have draught excluders around windows and doors, outside lights working, a supply of batteries, a couple of hot water bottles, know where the stop cock is for the water supply and above all get your chimney cleaned. If you are going for a walk or cycle wear a hi viz jacket and bring a light – in this murky weather it makes the roads so much safer for everyone. We constantly update our FB page with local alerts and information on keeping safe so do keep an eye on that. The Housing Aid for Older People Scheme used to improve the condition of an older person’s home is aimed at people 66 years of age and older and is means tested. People with a disability or who are elderly can apply for a grant to purchase grab rails, a level access shower, access ramps or a stair lift. Contact 061 496000 for further details. Committee members are Sean Broderick, Micheal O’Kelly N.T., Seamus Stack, Mossie Gleeson, Kathleen Collins, Mary McArthur, Buddy and Brenda Barry, John O’Sullivan, Billy Quirke N.T., Cllr.
