ANOTHER FIRST FOR LIMERICK:  John Nelligan penned the following tribute to his native county.  The first of Limerick’s firsts came when Limerick senior footballers won the first All-Ireland final in 1897, which was played in Donnybrook, Dublin. The second of Limerick’s firsts came when John Moran became the first directly elected mayor in the Republic. So, without further ado, let us heartily congratulate John on his election to high office. His family roots are well embedded in West Limerick and East Kerry and he has stated on many occasions that his exposure, from an early age, to the necessity of the need for practicality in the life of rural Ireland has given him an advantage in navigating the, sometimes dangerous, currents of political and commercial life. .We must, also, congratulate our six councillors on their re-election for the Newcastle West Electoral Area for another five years. Our new council has its inaugural meeting on June 21st and our new Mayor will, also, assume office on that date.  We wish the Council and the Mayor the very best of good fortune in their endeavours to advance the cause of Limerick City and County. Of particular importance will be the document that is to be referred to as the Mayoral Programme, as this will put meat on the bones of the remarks that John made during his campaign. Should Mayor Moran prove to be as energetic in his discharge of the duties of his office as he has promised, then we could be in for a rollercoaster ride over the next five years. Oh, to live in interesting times!

AN AIRBOURNE SURVEY: The Tellus survey, is a national program working on behalf of Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) gathering geochemical and geophysical data across Ireland. The Tellus team will shortly commence an airborne survey to gather geophysical data across counties Kerry, north-west Cork, and neighbouring Limerick. Given the aircraft will fly at a low altitude of 60 metres over rural areas and may startle sensitive livestock, we are keen to inform and engage with as many organisations as possible to help raise awareness of the survey activity. DAY FOR LIFE 2024:“The Lord is my Shepherd – Compassion and Hope at the End of Life”  There has been much discussion in the media recently about “assisted suicide”, whereby people who feel they are overburdened by suffering will be facilitated in bringing their lives to a premature end by a change in legislation. The Catholic Church opposes such proposals. As Catholics, along with many people of other faiths and none, we share a different vision about what it is to be fully human, especially when we are suffering and approaching death in the hope of eternal life. People who are coming towards the end of their lives are vulnerable, and recent research shows that many feel themselves a burden on their loved ones and wider society. Jesus shows us that life always has dignity and that there is no such a thing as a useless life. We are called to defend this gift of life to its natural end and to protect vulnerable citizens from a culture that could pressure them into assisted suicide. We support people with the companionship of a listening ear, appropriate treatment, and the best of care, so that their last days can be times of grace, intimacy and love.
Jesus did not send the sick away. Our Lady remained at the foot of the Cross to the very end as Her Son, Jesus, died. Mary is the model of compassionate presence and prayer whom we are called to imitate. People close to death and their loved ones, often go through similar darkness and pain but can come to a more complete acceptance and find peace in those treasured last moments accompanied by spiritual care.

Meeting Matt – the experience of one priest.
I first met Matthew when he was about twenty. His girlfriend, Claire, called into the house one day and asked if she could bring her boyfriend for a blessing, because he had been in hospital having treatment for Leukaemia. He was back home, but he still couldn’t go into public spaces because of the risk of infection. She suggested that she would bring Matt to meet me the following Saturday.
To be honest, when I saw him first, Matt looked a lot healthier and stronger than I had expected. The impression changed a bit, when he took off the wooly hat, because he had lost all his hair from the chemotherapy. We chatted for a while, initially about themselves and then about Matt’s illness. He was hopeful, but realistic. They had opened a door for me by asking if Matt could have a blessing. We ended up celebrating the anointing of the sick and I gave them Holy Communion.
We kept in regular contact after that and I got to know Matt and his family fairly well. A few months later, the leukaemia took hold again and he was back in hospital. It soon became clear, however, that Matt was not getting better, so he decided to come home and spend his final weeks surrounded by his family. There was nothing more that medical science could do. Matt was dying, but he was still surrounded by a community of care. The hospice team called regularly. Matt’s bed was in an alcove off the sitting room. His parents and siblings and, of course, Claire, accompanied him with love every step of the way.
A couple of days before he died, Matt asked me to come and say Mass for him in the house. He told me he had picked the Gospel himself; the well-known passage from St John: “I have given you a new commandment, love one another as I have loved you”. As I was setting up for the Mass, Matt said: “If it’s ok, I’d like to say a few words after the Gospel.” He spoke very simply to those who were gathered around him about how, like Jesus in the Gospel, he would be leaving them very soon. He reassured them that, throughout the experience of his illness, he had felt surrounded by love, and he encouraged them to continue loving one another”. That was it; nothing complicated, but very powerful.  Matt did not just live with dignity through his final illness; he grew in his humanity and in his faith. All we had to do was to accompany him and to make sure that he never felt abandoned or alone. It was the story of the Good Samaritan in real life.

PRAYER FOR IMPROVEMENT IN THE WEATHER: The Lord says ask and you shall receive so we continue to pray even as the weather improves and in thanksgiving too for the recent good weather:  “Loving God, we pray to you in good times and also in difficult ones too.  We give thanks for the blessings of our countryside.  We pray for fine weather for our farmers and all those who work the land.  Our prayers are for the land to dry up, so cattle can get out and crops sown.  We pray for balance to our seasons and especially now we pray for some sunshine and dry weather.  Amen.

A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE FR. TIM GALVIN:  On Saturday, February 10 following the 6.30pm Mass which will be offered to mark his 1st anniversary, Fran Leahy originally from New St. and who volunteered with Fr. Tim in 2015 and 2016 as well as returning again in 2023 following his untimely death will present a slide show showcasing some of the work that was enabled by the donations Fr. Tim received from home.  It will take place at St. Ita’s Day Care Centre and tea and biscuits will be served.   Everyone is welcome.

GALA CONCERT:  A fundraising concert in aid of Tournafulla Community Hall on Saturday, February 10 will star Denis Curtin, Donie Nolan and friends, The Wright Sisters, Willie and John Larkin, Tournafulla Church Choir and the local Wrenboy Group. GETTING MARRIED IN 2024 CHURCH REQUIREMENTS:  While a couple need only give three months’ notice of their intention to marry it is common practice for a couple to book the church a long time in advance. It is important to contact the Parish Office to make sure that the church is available on the day you require. Arrange to meet the priest of the parish. The meetings of the couple with their priest are a key part of the preparation process. These meetings are an opportunity for a couple to reflect on what Christian marriage asks of them. The priest will also advise the couple about the various documents that are required before the marriage can take place. A person getting married in the Church will need to get a Certificate of Baptism from the parish in which they were baptised and a Certificate of Confirmation from the parish in which they were confirmed. These documents should be issued no less than six months prior to the date of marriage. Letters of freedom are also required. The priest will explain to the couple how they can obtain these documents. The rules governing freedom to marry in the Catholic Church can be complicated for some individuals. The best advice is for all couples to contact their local priest well in advance to talk through the documentation required. It is advised that all couples planning to get married in the Church should attend a Pre-Marriage course. This should be done shortly after a couple get engaged.

SCRIBBLING FOR CHARITY:  West Limerick author, Pat McLoughlin recently launched his 6th book ‘The Unbreakable Dream’. It was launched by Minister, Patrick O’ Donovan at Longcourt House Hotel in Newcastle West.  The proceeds from the novel will go to Milford Care Centre/Hospice to whom Pat has already presented a cheque for €1250.00.  A few remaining copies of the book are still available at Siopa Milsean.

KATIE GOING ON TOUR:  Written by Therése Prendeville, granddaughter of the great MaryJo whose appearances on stage in Abbeyfeale back in the day are the stuff of legend “Katie” will be in St. John’s on Thursday, April 11, the Schoolyard Theatre, Charleville on Saturday, April 20 and back in the Glórach on Sunday, April 21.  I saw this play in the Glórach before Christmas and the very thought of it sends shivers down my spine – the storyline and the acting are just so powerful.  Take any chance you get to see it.

Be wary of requests for money from family members – ring them and check it out. Parishioners are looking forward to the Celtic Brothers Christmas Concert which will take place in the parish church next Friday 15^th of December. Ticket sales have picked up a pace this week, so we advise all those who wish to attend the concert to purchase your tickets as soon as possible.
The concert will include all our Christmas favourite songs and carols.  From ‘White Christmas’ to ‘O Holy Night’.
It will be good to get together once again and join in this community celebration in preparation for Christmas.

IN THE MOOD FOR MUSIC:  The Glórach Theatre hosted a charity concert on Saturday, October 8th in aid of Milford Hospice and Abbeyfeale for Africa.  Helen Hasenfuss, Riona Ní Churtáin and Scott Fitzgerald were joined by the church cantors, Aodhán Cotter and P.P. Fr. Tony. They played and sang a  selection of popular classics from Ragtime, jazz, swing, Latin, music from the films, light classical, a little traditional, some folk, some pop…Truth be told it was a magical night and the those of us who were lucky enough to get a seat in the full to capacity theatre will remember where we were on the second Saturday of October for many’s the year and I’m not thinking of the Rugby!

BRUACH NA CARRAIGE ROCKCHAPEL:  ”Seán Moylan Irish Revolutionary” one man show last Sunday was a revelation – if you ever get the chance to see it, take it.  The story was brought to the stage by Newmarket actor Micheal Patric O’ Sullivan of Seán Moylan who following the War of Independence became a Fianna Fáil Minister.  It tells the story of the men who fought for freedom and was an eyeopener for those of us who have forgotten what our ancestors went throught to gain our freedom from oppression.

USED STAMPS: Your used stamps can do so much and it is worth taking the time to keep them cut approximately l” around them and drop them into a box provided in the Church in NCW under the table in the porch Sacristy side entrance.  There are 120 girls in St. Mary’s Home Mynmar the Servite sisters look after them providing food, shelter and education up until 2020 they were going to school but since then schools are closed.  They live in a regime now that is controlling, dangerous along with prices escalating for rice, oil and food, struggling as are the poor people in Mynmar.  We manage to get money out to Sister Salette in person from friends who are travelling home to their district where the sisters live.  With the used stamps we collected we give them to a stamp collector who gives us €5 per kilo so the more stamps we can get the more funds we receive.  If you wish to post stamps to me my name is Maureen Finnegan please give me  a call 087 9845102.   Thank you for helping.

CYCLISTS ON THE GREENWAY:  A request has issued that cyclists would ring their bells to signal their approach as walkers who can be engrossed in conversation or the scenery or listening to music get a shock when they, the cyclists suddenly whizz past and accidents could easily occur if walkers were not aware of cyclists about to pass them out.  I’ve also been asked to remind cyclists that they should not cycle on the footpaths when they come up town.

COMMUNITY ALERT: If something sounds too good to be true then more than likely it is so be careful out there. Warn your teenagers about how easy it is to become a money mule but if they receive a criminal record it could affect their chances of travelling or taking out a morgage. Take care on the roads and make sure that you are visible to other road users so if walking wear a high viz jacket and after dusk carry a torch and if driving turn on your lights if the wipers are on.  Lock the doors of your car when you are inside, do not leave a handbag visible on the seat.  When you are at home keep the two doors locked so that if someone calls a second person cannot enter the house through the back door while you are occupied at the front door.
