TABLE QUIZ IN AID OF RECOVERY HAVEN:  Ploughman Bar, The Square, Abbeyfeale Friday next, November 11 from 8.30pm.

AFTERNOON TEA DANCE: Tickets at €5 are on sale in Ann Lyons, The Square and at the Farmers’ Market for the dance on Sunday, November 13 in aid of WL102fm. Dancing will be to the ever popular Mike Condon, teas will be served and there will be a raffle.  Your support would be much appreciated.

ABBEYFEALE FOR AFRICA:  Calling all bakers and jam makers, the annual cake sale for Fr. Tim Galvin’s Mission in South Sudan takes place on Sunday, December 11 at St. Ita’s Hall from 10am -1pm.  Cakes, breads, jams etc., can be handed into Batt Harnett, The Square or Mairead Daly (086 8594983) on Saturday, December 10.  Abbeyfeale for Africa would like to offer best wishes to Traoine Tobin, our founder and Chairperson on her retirement and thank her for all the work she has put into fundraising for Fr. Tim over the last 20 years and more.  The account is always open in the Credit Union for any donations.

TOWN PARK NEWS:  The Strictly Come Dancing committee made a cheque presentation of €8,271 to the Town Park on Sunday night last – the proceeds of last May’s competition. This money along with a grant of over €3,000 from the County Council is being used to pay for the work currently being undertaken dredging the ponds.  A huge thank you to all involved.

FEALEBRIDGE SOCIAL:  Fealebridge& Headley’s Bridge Co-Op will hold their 47th annual social on Friday, December 2 at the Devon Inn Hotel, Templeglantine. Music will be provided by Heart & Soul, and there will be plenty of spot prizes to be won on the night. Tickets are available at both creameries and also from staff and committee members.

CHURCH GATE COLLECTION:  The annual church gate collection for local community radio station WL102fm will be taken up at all Masses next weekend.

NEW TOASTMASTER CLUB SETS UP IN LISTOWEL:  If you would like to gain self confidence, self esteem and improve your ability to speak in public then you should check out the newest public speaking club in North Kerry.  The next meeting will be held in the Listowel Arms Hotel on Thursday, November 17 from 8 -10pm.  Admission €5 which covers cost of refreshments and rent of the room.  Further information from Gerard Mannix on 087 2193670.

SOCIAL FARMING:  This is the practice of offering family farms as a form of social services for people with intellectual disabilities and/or mental heath difficulties.  The farm remais a typical working farm where people in need of support can benefit from participation in the farms’s chores and activities.  It also creates the opportunity to connect farmes with local communities through the opening up of their farms as part of the social support system of the community.  For further information call Stefanie or Dearbhla at West Limerick Resources on 069 62222.

HARVEST CONCERT:  PJ Murrihy, violinist Ann Phelan, Ella Maria O’Dwyer, Peter Burke, Tommy McAuley and Willie Relihan are the stars of a fundraising concert for WL102fm which is being held at the Rathkeale House Hotel on Wednesday, November 23. Doors open 7.30pm, show starts 8pm.  Tickets €10 on the door.  Your support will be appreciated.

POETRY COMPETITION:  The Mid Western Drugs and Alcohol Forum are hosting an awareness week in Limerick city and county from Monday, November 14- Friday, November 18.  They are running a competition and asking people to write a poem with a theme of Drugs and Alcohol awareness and be in with a chance to win €100.  Email your entries to [email protected] or post to Limerick Writers Centre, 12 Barrington St. Limerick before Wednesday, November 16.

ABBEYFEALE’S SINGING CLUB:  West Limerick singing club monthly singing session take place on the first Friday of every month in the Ramble Inn Bar, Abbeyfeale.

COMMUNITY ALERT HOSTS CHRISTMAS PARTY:  We hope, in conjunction with Abbeyfeale active retired group to hold a Christmas party for seniors on Sunday, November 27 in the Day Centre, Convent St. from 1-5pm.  Our community Garda Roger O’Donoghue will be present to give a short talk on how to keep safe in your home over the winter.  A three course meal consisting of Turkey and Ham, choice of deserts and tea/coffee will be served and it is planned to have an afternoon of dancing to Gerard Conaghan.  Cards will be available for those who would like a card game rather than dancing.  There is seating for 82 persons and tickets at €10 each can be purchased from Bridie Scully Collins, Mary Mc Gill (Abbeyfeale Active Retired) or Mary McArthur, Marian Harnett (Abbeyfeale Community Alert).

MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS:   Many people choose to abstain from alcohol for the month of November and offer this prayerful act in honour of their deceased loved ones. You can do likewise! Take the SHORT-TERM pledge for NOVEMBER.

WEST LIMERICK TOASTMASTERS:   Toastmasters will continue on the first and third Wednesday every month until May 2017. Next meeting Wednesday, November 16 at the Desmond Complex, Newcastle West from 8-10pm.  Further information 087 7972855.

‘FALLING GRADIENT’ ON SALE IN ABBEYFEALE:  A new book, titled “Falling Gradient”, which tells the story of all the railway routes that served Limerick has just been launched. It has been written and self-published by Joe Coleman, of Meelick, Co. Clare, whose family had many connections with the railway. Joe has filled his 450+ pages with an amount of stories and an excellent selection of photographs. Joe is an active supporter of the Great Southern Trail as his father was an engine driver on the line. The book is an easy read and is available in West Limerick from the NCW Book Shop in Newcastle West and from Ann Lyons in Abbeyfeale.

MEN ON THE MOVE:  Do you want to feel fitter and have more energy.  Sports Partnership are delivering a men only physical activity programme at Teach Feile, New Street, Abbeyfeale on Tuesday nights from 7-8pm.  All welcome to come along and enjoy the benefits of exercising with a mixed age and ability group.  Further information  087 7558459.

SET DANCING CLUB:  West Limerick Set Dancing Club monthly Ceili In Devon Inn Templeglantine on Sunday, November 23 at 4pm.   Music by Star of Munster Ceili Band. Everybody welcome, teas etc served.

SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE:  The annual Remembrance Service at Maternity Hospital Limerick takes place at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ennis Road, Limerick on Sunday, November 13 at 3pm.  We invite parents who have experienced the death of their baby/pregnancy loss at any stage, together with their family, friends and hospital staff to this service.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR CONVERSATIONAL CLASSES. Volunteers are wanted for Conversational English classes with migrants in Newcastle West. The classes run every Wednesday evening at the Community Centre Newcastle West @ 7:30pm-9pm. The classes are in small groups with just 3 to 4 students with each volunteer, and books are provided. EIGHT MASSES FOR NUMBER 8:  Bishop Brendan Leahy has described as “moving and inspirational” the gesture by Tony, the 11 year old son of Anthony Foley, in asking people to go to Mass and light candles over the next 8 Sunday’s for deceased loved ones. Endorsing the 8 masses for no8 Facebook Campaign launched by Tony Foley and his family, Bishop Leahy said it was a deeply touching and selfless gesture at a very tragic time for the Foley and Hogan families.

RURAL SOCIAL SCHEME: West Limerick Resources in conjunction with the Department of Social Protection implement the Rural Social Scheme in West Limerick.  The scheme aims to provide part time flexible employment opportunities to low income farmers by utilising their skills and talents on community and not for profit projects.  If you are: (a) currently in receipt of Farm Assist, (b) have a herd number, a copy of your Single Farm Payment application and are in receipt of a qualifying payment from social welfare (www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Rural-Social-Scheme.aspx) then you (or your spouse) could benefit from the scheme in return for 19.5 hours of work in the community, (c) you will also be contributing to a class A stamp while on the scheme.  Work is available in all areas with hours to fit in with your farming needs. The following people are also permitted to participate in the scheme:  children or siblings of a qualifying herd owner provided they meet the necessary qualifying criteria.

WORLD DAY OF REMEMBERANCE FOR ROAD TRAFFIC VICTIMS:   On Saturday November 19 Mass will be celebrated @ 7pm in the Church of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale for all of those who died due to road accidents. Everyone is welcome to join us to remember our loved ones at this time.

JIM LYONS’S RAMBLING HOUSE:  Held on the third Tuesday of the month in Knockaloucca with the next one taking place on Tuesday, November 15.

MAUREEN’S OFF TO DUBLIN:  A day trip to Dublin on Sunday, November 20 will leave Newcastle West at 8am. “We will be calling to Mrs. Monaghan for our breakfast and if you so wish you can order the home made bread that you will have on the table plus lots more scones, cakes, mince pies and Christmas pudding and your order will be ready to collect when we return to have our dinner. Sunday, January 15.  We are going to see a demonstration of Glass Blowing useing reclycled glass.  We will have our usual breakfast & dinner.  There will be a surprise visit included in this trip.  Sunday, February 5.  We are going to the INEC as we have been doing for a good numbers of years to see the fantastic Killorglin Players.  Their 54th Pantomine is Robin Hood, we will be leaivng NCW at  3pm. sharp and picking up in Abbeyfeale.  Doors open at 4.30pm. and the performance this year is at the earlier time of 5pm.  We will have time for a cuppa before hand.  Spring Break  Friday,  March 31- Monday, April 3, 2017.  We have a full and exciting week end planned – touring by day and of course we will have dancing in our hotel after dinner for two nights and our successful entertaining night as we have been doing for the past couple of years on one of the nights.  We will be going to Northern Ireland visiting beautiful Co. MERCY IN ACTION:  A special Year of Mercy celebration will take place in St John’s Cathedral on Sunday November 20 at 4.00 pm. A number of local and national organisations have agreed to be part of the story of the liturgy and it promises to be a reflective and meaningful experience for young and old alike.
