CULTURE NIGHT: Thanks to all who attended, contributed and helped in the organisation of our event for Culture Night last Friday. Held in the intimate atmosphere of the foyer at the Glórach Theatre, a diverse evening of poetry, drama, story and song was held, and what emerged in many of the pieces was a definitive sense of locality, with many references to local historical events and to some of the wonderful present day things that make Abbeyfeale such a special place.
GOD HAS NO COUNTRY AT THE GLÓRACH: The amazing story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty’s actions during World War II is brought to stage by Killarney actor, Donal Courtney. Based in Rome, O’Flaherty organised escape routes for many POW’s, political dissidents and Jews from the clutches of the Nazis. Courtney, who mentored world famous actor Michael Fassbender when he was based in Killarney, wrote and performed the play in 2013 during a festival to commemorate the Monsignor. The popularity and acclaim it received has seen the play travel far beyond the Kingdom, and it comes to the Glórach Theatre for one night only on this Thursday, September 28 at 8.30 pm, with a Q and A session to follow. SINGING IN THE RAIN: Our monthly classic film screening at the Glórach occurs on Wednesday, October 4 at 8 pm with our showing of Singing in the Rain. Starring Gene Kelly, this 1952 film is regarded as one of the finest movie musicals ever made. We’ve a special treat on the night of the film, for before and after the screening, there will be live dance routines performed by teenage sensations, The Templeglantine Troupers, a match for Gene Kelly in his heyday! YOUTH CLUB NEWS: Abbeyfeale Youth Club will be opening shortly for its current members. The Youth Club through its sporting and social activities provides a vital service for young people in our parish and for surrounding parishes. We acknowledge the excellent leadership of the club leaders and we thank them for their commitment over the years. Key to the success of the Youth Club is the support and involvement of parents. Without the involvement of parents the Youth Club would simply not be open and we thank the current parents involved with the club for their interest and the time they give to running the club. The club leaders are planning with the help of new parents to open a club for second year secondary school students. We are now seeking the help of parents who are willing to give some time each week as volunteers with the club so that this age group can begin availing of the clubs activities. The club is based in St Ita’s Hall and is open on Friday and Saturday nights. By volunteering for this work you will ensure that this essential service for young people in our parish is continued. BUS TO FAMILY FUN DAY: Limerick Diocese launches its preparations for World Meeting of Families 2018 with a ‘Free Family Fun Afternoon’ in the grounds of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick on Sunday October 8. There will be marching bands and a mobile farm, youth activities and child-friendly events, water zorbs and climbing walls, musical acts every hour and quiet prayer spaces, all brought together in a family Mass at 4pm on the steps of the Tara building in Mary I. We need a diverse mix of people with various skills and experiences to ensure the success of this event. Whatever your reasons or your focus, we know your skills and experience can help us and we would welcome your support in helping us create a successful, historic and joyous event. WMOF2018 volunteers will be assigned from a wide variety of roles to match their skills and experience. Tasks may include supporting information and welcome centres, transport hubs and event services at the major WMOF2018 venues. A volunteer must be a resident of the island of Ireland at the time of application. Be over 18 years of age as of January 1, 2018. Be sensitive and respectful of our Catholic ethos. Must apply for Garda vetting as part of the application process in line with the procedure laid down. Be available to volunteer for a minimum of four consecutive days between August 18-29, 2018.
