GOD HAS NO COUNTRY AT THE GLÓRACH: They came from all over West Limerick and North Kerry last Thursday night to see Killarney man Donal Courtney perform the one man show he wrote and produced on the late Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty – the Kerryman who saved 6,500 people from the Gestapo during World War 2 while based in the Vatican. The intimate venue with its great acoustics was the ideal place to learn about a piece of history that was mostly brushed under the carpet over the last 70 odd years and the Q and A session afterwards with Donal was informative, interesting and insightful. Well done Lorcan, John and Co.
BUS TO FAMILY FUN DAY: Limerick Diocese launches its preparations for World Meeting of Families 2018 with a ‘Free Family Fun Afternoon’ in the grounds of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick on Sunday October 8. There will be marching bands and a mobile farm, youth activities and child-friendly events, water zorbs and climbing walls, musical acts every hour and quiet prayer spaces, all brought together in a family Mass at 4pm on the steps of the Tara building in Mary I. SINGING IN THE RAIN: Our monthly classic film screening at the Glórach occurs on Wednesday, October 4 at 8 pm with our showing of Singing in the Rain. Starring Gene Kelly, this 1952 film is regarded as one of the finest movie musicals ever made. HOPE FOUNDATION: Conor McAuliffe and Caoimhe Pegley from Coláiste agus Íosef Abbeyfeale who spoke at Mass last week and held a collection for their immersion program to Calcutta, India would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who donated to the cause. They raised a total of €2,884 over the three Masses. This is a massive sum of money and has aided them a huge amount in their fundraising. The people of Abbeyfeale are extremely generous and this money will greatly aid The Hope Foundations projects in Calcutta.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SHOP: St Vincent de Paul shops are a very important aspect of the service SVP provides. Not only do they provide people with new and lightly worn items at affordable prices, they also provide an income source for the Society, which is recycled directly back into the community. Abbeyfeale Vincent’s shop is now under new management and is seeking the help of volunteers to help run the shop. YOUTH CLUB NEWS: Abbeyfeale Youth Club will be opening shortly for its current members. The Youth Club through its sporting and social activities provides a vital service for young people in our parish and for surrounding parishes. We acknowledge the excellent leadership of the club leaders and we thank them for their commitment over the years. Key to the success of the Youth Club is the support and involvement of parents. Without the involvement of parents the Youth Club would simply not be open and we thank the current parents involved with the club for their interest and the time they give to running the club. The club leaders are planning with the help of new parents to open a club for second year secondary school students. We are now seeking the help of parents who are willing to give some time each week as volunteers with the club so that this age group can begin availing of the clubs activities. The club is based in St Ita’s Hall and is open on Friday and Saturday nights. By volunteering for this work you will ensure that this essential service for young people in our parish is continued. COMMUNITY ADDICTION STUDIES COURSE: A course will run in NCW from Wednesday, October 11 for 13 weeks, it costs €50 and is free to those on a social welfare benefit. “Are you going across, missus?” I asked, taking her by the elbow and helping her slowly over as the cars stopped to allow us through. She still clung on to the shopping.
“There you are, missus.” I said, depositing her safely on the other side.
“Thank you, young man,” she replied. “but less of the ‘missus’. Its ‘miss’ you should be calling me, for I have never met the man that could tie me down yet.”
“You should read Fifty Shades Of Grey” I murmured, but she ignored the jibe.
“Aren’t you the lad that do be doing the bit of writing?” she asked, looking up at me.
“I do put pen to paper occasionally.” I admitted modestly. (There are those who would claim that I have much to be modest about.)
“I have a brother in New York that do read your stories every week.” she said. “Paddy Joe thinks you are great craic but of course the poor old devil was never really right in the head.”
“What part of New York is he in?” I asked.
“The Bronx.” she answered. “He is there with the last forty years and not a bother on him. Do you think you could give him a mention in your next bit of writing?” she continued. “He’d be delighted with that.”
“Of course I can,” I took out a biro that I always carry with me in the off-chance that someone might ask for my autograph. “Now, what is his name?”
“Paddy Joe.” she replied.
“Paddy Joe what?” I persisted.
“Paddy Joe.” she said again. “How many Paddy Joes do you think there are in The Bronx?”
“Quite a few, I imagine.”
“Well, just put down Paddy Joe. We don’t want to give out too many details for fear that Trump might also be reading your stories and gets it in to his thick head to send poor Paddy home. That fella has it in for the Irish – so he has. Him and his fecking wall, and we trying to abolish the border over here!” I’ll see what I can do.” I promised.
“Good man.” she said. And with that, she hoisted her shopping bags and disappeared down Church Street.
So, Paddy Joe in The Bronx, whoever you are, (and you know who you are) your sister in Abbeyfeale says hello.
And if American immigration officials should suddenly begin deporting every Paddy Joe in The Bronx, then New York will come to a standstill – and we will get the blame!

COMMUNITY ALERT: If you have been a victim of crime call the crime victims helpline on Freephone 116 006 between 10—5.30pm Monday to Friday. Now that the nights are longer than the days it’s time to think about home security. The day of leaving the key in the door or the door on the latch is gone unfortunately so get into the habit of locking both front and back doors when you are inside. That way if someone comes to the front door you know that a second person is not around the back trying to get in behind your back. Invest in a safety chain so that you don’t need to open the door fully until you know who you have. If you have a panic button from Community Alert wear it on your wrist – if you trip and fall or feel dizzy or sick or are frightened by a caller press the button. The monitoring company will answer immediately and get one of your nominated contacts to go to you if necessary. Don’t worry about pressing the button by mistake, that’s the service you are paying for and if you only want to hear a friendly voice that’s ok too. If you have a security system in place from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, contact the committee member who organised it, for a free carbon monoxide alarm courtesy of Airtricity. If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65. If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56. This works out cheaper that the rent of the landline which is currently €25 per month. VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED: World Meeting of Families in Dublin 2018. Would you like to help organise this amazing event? We would be delighted to have you! We need a diverse mix of people with various skills and experiences to ensure the success of this event. Whatever your reasons or your focus, we know your skills and experience can help us and we would welcome your support in helping us create a successful, historic and joyous event. WMOF2018 volunteers will be assigned from a wide variety of roles to match their skills and experience. Tasks may include supporting information and welcome centres, transport hubs and event services at the major WMOF2018 venues. A volunteer must be a resident of the island of Ireland at the time of application. Be over 18 years of age as of January 1, 2018. Be sensitive and respectful of our Catholic ethos. Must apply for Garda vetting as part of the application process in line with the procedure laid down. Be available to volunteer for a minimum of four consecutive days between August 18-29, 2018. (Shifts will last up to 8 hours and you will be given adequate rest time). Be available for three mandatory training sessions, starting before the end of 2017. The training sessions will be on Saturdays and will last 3 to 5 hours. They will cover Induction, Job and Venue Specific Training. Advance notice will be given of dates.
