PROLOGUE: The three C’s of life; Choices, Chances, Changes.

T. NA G. IN TOWN FOR THE PARADE: The ever popular Templeglantine Comhaltas will open proceedings with a toe-tapping session of music, song and dance in The Square. T na G will also be in attendance and hope to televise highlights from the parade later that evening. The parade is set to leave from Mountmahon at 4pm, and participants are advised to arrive at the start in good time.
It will be led by the Rathkeale Brass Band, and will proceed down Main Street and past the reviewing stand before disbanding by the council car park. Hopefully, crowds of spectators and supporters will line the footpaths to cheer on the various floats and entries. Prizes will be awarded for Best Float, Best Youth Entry and Best Decorated Window. Participants are reminded that they are responsible for the insurance of their individual vehicles and will be asked to sign a waiver to this effect before being permitted to take part in the parade. Most insurance companies will add this to their cover, free of charge, when requested. We hope that the weather holds up and that the parade will attract a huge crowd as we celebrate the feast day of our patron saint.

DANCE ON ST. PATRICKS’ NIGHT: A dance with music by the Premier Blue Boys and special guests will be held in the Railway Bar on St. Patricks Night. It is a fundraiser for the new bus purchased by the The Friends of St Ita’s Hospital, Newcastlewest. A great night is promised, music starts at 10pm , doors open at 9. Finger food and light refreshments will be served and a raffle will take place.

REMEMBERING ZOË PROVIDES ST. PATRICK’S DAY SURPRISE FOR LOCAL CHILDREN: Work on a zip line and autism play area has finished in the Town Park. Funding was raised by the Remembering Zoë committee in honour of Zoë Scannell – a little Abbeyfeale girl who died following a tragic road accident almost three years ago and who made great use of the Town Park during her short lifetime. The autism area is receiving great feedback and is a an asset to all the families in the area who have family members affected by this condition. Now that the zip line is installed, all that the children who use the park daily need now – is sunshine.

GLÓRACH CONCERT: A renewed sense of energy is one of the certainties associated with the gradual emergence of spring, and here at the Glórach we’re feeling particularly energised and excited about our upcoming spring concert. Featuring on the night will be a mélange of different acts, including the harmonious singing of local group, The Lost Souls, the soulful jazz duo The Mysterious Mr Valentine and the sweet songs of Philip Enright. Add in Bella Ciao with their powerful ballads, Dinny Keogh with his mix of songs and the radical compositions of Stephen Wall, and you can be guaranteed a brilliant night of entertainment. The concert takes place at the Glórach Community Theatre on Friday, March 31, with curtains up at 8 pm. Tickets can be booked at 0871383940 and all are most welcome.

EMIGRANTS COLLECTION: A collection for the support of our emigrants and the Irish Chaplaincy who work throughout the world with them will be taken up on St Patricks Day at all Masses in Abbeyfeale.

DOG WARDEN VISITS ABBEYFEALE: Limerick City and County Council wishes to announce that its Dog Wardens are commencing a programme of inspections of dog licences throughout Athea, Abbeyfeale and Carrigkerry over the coming weeks. Dog owners will be required, on request, to produce a dog licence for their dog.

MEENKILLY CARD GAME: Joint winners on Tuesday night were Sean O Connor, Paddy Sheehan, Gobnait Scannell and Mossie Collins, Michael O Kelly, Maurice Collins.

FUNDRAISERS FOR COMMUNITY COUNCIL (ACC): Bank of Ireland as part of their sponsorship of the Abbeyfeale Expo have offered to match the first €1,000 raised by the ACC so your support for the following fundraisers would be much appreciated. MOCK WEDDING: Well done to Nicole Prendeville Doyle, who along with her grandmother Carina, ran a very successful fundraiser last weekend prior to her trip to Uganda to do missionary work in June. We wish Nicole a safe journey and wonderful experiences this summer.

NOONAN’S CHRISTMAS LIGHTS; A massive €26,700 was raised this year. Tony and family would like to thank all those who donated and supported them and voted for them during the Energia competition for the best Christmas Display. They received €4,000 to add to the pot making this their best year yet raising money for local charities.

GOOD FRIDAY CLEAN UP: Following on from the roaring successes of the Team Limerick Clean-Up and TLC 2, we are delighted to announce that the clean-up, will take place again this year on Good Friday, April 14. Abbeyfeale parish were fantastic last year at TLC 2 and played such massive part in the event and we are hoping that you will once again be represented. FLEADH BY THE FEALE: This year Abbeyfeale will celebrate the twenty-third Fleadh by the Feale traditional music festival, which takes place on the May Bank Holiday Weekend from Thursday, April 27 – Monday, May 1. Each year the committee work extremely hard to bring the best of traditional entertainment to the area. We are delighted to announce that the headline act for this year’s “Celebrity Concert”, is one of Ireland’s finest traditional ambassadors, the maestro fiddle player “Frankie Gavin & De Dannan”. This band has toured Ireland extensively and Countries world-wide exciting their audiences with their energetic style of playing. This is a concert not to be missed. It will take place on Sunday 30th April commencing at 8 pm in Coláiste Íde agus Iosef, support will be provided by the talented music students attending the College. AFTERNOON TEA DANCING: The Wednesday Club are hosting an Afternoon Tea Dance in Fr. Casey’s Clubhouse on Sunday, April 9 from 3- 6 pm with dancing to Paddy Qulligan. All funds will go to the Air Ambulance service. Tickets are now on sale from committee members including Mary Mc Arthur and Madeline O’Connor.

PILGRIM STATUE VISITS ABBEYFEALE: This year marks the 100 anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima. On 11 January this year, Pope Francis blessed six statues of Our Lady of Fatima to be brought to each continent, to appeal for prayer and reparation for world peace and to promote the sanctity of family life in our world. One of the statues blessed on that day will be brought to Abbeyfeale on Friday, March 24 by representatives of the Alliance of the two Hearts. Mass will be celebrated at 7pm and there will be an opportunity for people to come and pray before the Centennial Statue prior to the 7.00pm Mass and for a short while afterwards.

WEST LIMERICK TOASTMASTERS: Toastmasters will continue on the first and third Wednesday every month until May 2017. Next meeting Wednesday, March 15 at the Desmond Complex, Newcastle West from 8-10pm. This will have a special St. Patrick’s Day flavour about it from the topics to the green sponge cake with the cup of green (!) tea. Further information 087 7972855. Great for anyone who finds it hard to stand up in public and get their opinion across.

ABBEYFEALE COMMUNITY ALERT NOTES: An Garda Síochána has launched a dedicated phone line for the reporting of child sexual abuse. The phone line number is 1800 555 222.This confidential freephone line will be manned on a 24 hour basis, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This is a freephone number meaning that there will be no cost to callers from calling this number. An Garda Síochána encourages victims of child sexual abuse to report any such incident at the earliest opportunity including those incidents of an historical nature. In conjunction with the launch of the phone line, An Garda Síochána has also published a guide on the options available to people wishing to report child sexual abuse and sexual crime. Text Alert forms available from any member of the committee. All persons aged 65 or over, living alone or with someone aged over 65 are entitled to a panic alarm system.

FREE PARENTS WORKSHOP ON INTERNET SAFETY: West Limerick Resources, in conjunction with the ISPCC, is running a free evening workshop on Children’s Internet Safety for parents, guardians and all other interested individuals, living throughout West Limerick. CREATIVE WRITING COURSE FOR OLDER PEOPLE: The Limerick Writers’ Centre presents a series of creative writing classes, featuring poetry and short story for older people – aged 55 plus – an age group that is often underrepresented in literature and writing activities. Many people, people who may have missed out on things in their life will through their participation in this course express their hidden talents through creative writing. Specifically it seeks to encourage the creativity of senior citizens in the run up to Bealtaine 2017 and beyond. In conjunction with the Limerick Writers’ Centre and supported by Bealtaine 2017, the facilitator, award-winning poet Ron Carey, will give friendly and personal support to each participant. At the end of the course Limerick Writers’ Centre will give consideration to publishing a book featuring the work produced. The book would be published in May during Bealtaine Festival 2017.

The workshops will be held at the Limerick Writers’ Centre, 12 Barrington Street, Limerick on Saturday, April 22 and Saturday, May 20 from10.30am to 12.30pm.

ABBEYFEALE TOWN PARK: To mark National Tree Week 2017 we are organizing a Nature and Forest Walk here in the Town Park in Abbeyfeale, on Saturday, March 11 at 12 noon. Our local nature experts Anneke Vrieling, Lorcan Curtin and Tony Kennelly will attend on the day to speak about the social, economic and environmental benefits of Forestry and natural habitats. TOWN EXPO: Coláiste Íde agus Iosef was a hive of activity last week for the Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town Expo with 131 businesses, artisan producers, community and farming organisations setting up stalls and meeting and greeting their customers, neighbours and friends over two days. A huge thank you must go to Barry O’Leary, Diane Browne and staff from the local branch, Liam Murphy, Joan Collins, Elaine and staff from the Coláiste and Maurice O’Connell, Chairman of Abbeyfeale Community Council and his committee members for all the work that went into the organisation, setting up and dismantling of the Expo. Thank you too, to Fr. Tony Mullins PP for the use of the church car park and to the local businesses who sponsored prizes, tickets and food. It was a joint affair and brought the whole community together for a weekend of fun, friendship and networking. Well done, the only question remaining is when will the next one be!

KNOCKNASNA ABU: Well done to Faith Kennelly who attends Knocknasna N.S. and who was the winner of the Primary Schools Poetry competition during the Bank of Ireland Expo held over the weekend in Abbeyfeale. As well as winning the first prize of a tablet Faith was also celebrating her 10^th birthday on Friday so warm congratulations to her and all her family. Faith is daughter of Declan and Karen Kennelly, Knocknasna and granddaughter to proud grannies Kathleen Kennelly and Nell Woulfe, Glin. Faith who took to public speaking, in front of a packed hall, like a duck to water told a clearly enthralled compere Marty Morrissey that she plans to be a Barrister when she grows up. Watch this space!

WARMER HOMES: IRD Duhallow, a Community Based Organisation based in Newmarket Co Cork, operates the Warmer Homes Scheme in North Cork, South Limerick and all of County Kerry. This scheme provides attic and cavity wall insulation services to help improve the energy efficiency of homes while also reducing fuel bills. Mother Concepta has arrived home from Africa and is taking charge of the religious ceremony much to the chagrin of the bride who had no notion of saying the obey word and was planning using the following: Paddy, do you take Mary, to be your partner in the adventure that lies ahead?

There was war in Knockbrack all week with Rev. Mother Concepta leading the charge and the night promises more of the same. Abbeyfeale Drama Group will be playing a leading role in this Mock Wedding event so need I say more – it will be a howl. Further information 087-6657154.

The parade will proceed down Main Street and past the reviewing stand before disbanding by the council car park. Prizes will be awarded for Best Float, Best Youth Entry and Best Decorated Window. Participants are reminded that they are responsible for the insurance of their individual vehicles and will be asked to sign a waiver to this effect before being permitted to take part in the parade. ABBEYFEALE HARRIERS 2017 REPORT: The Abbeyfeale Harriers 2017 Hunting Festival has concluded for another year. Hunt clubs from Limerick, Cork, Kerry, Armagh, Tyrone and Wexford participated in the weeks hunting. Hunt supporters from all over Ireland and beyond enjoyed the weeks sport and socialising at this annual get together. A donation has been made to the Irish Cancer Society. The Abbeyfeale Harriers would like to give a special thanks to all those that supported the hunt festival including: The clubs that participated. The hunt followers who came from all over Ireland and beyond. The publicans who kindly sponsored the food after each hunt. The Scartaglin Harriers for hosting the hunt meet in Scartaglin. MAUREEN’S TRIP: Curraghmore House, Waterford is the historic house of the 9th Marquis who died February 22, 2015. The Estate was owned by the de la Poer (Power) family over 500 years, during which time the family gained the titles Baron L Poer (1535) and Viscount Decies and Earl of ‘Tyrone). Curraghmore House is surrounded by 2,500 acres of formal gardens, woodlands and grazing fields making the largest private demesne in Ireland.

Gnarled pink Chestnut trees line the approach to the big house and orginal castle tower. St. Hubert’s Stag with crucifix between its antlers – genuine horns on the de la Poer family emblem – gazes across the large courtyard from atop of the old castle. Curragmore meaning great bog, is the last of the 4 castles built by the de la Poer family.

Shell House hidden in the shrubbery near the main house at Curraghmore is the most enchanting Shell House, created byCatherine Countess of Tyrone with ‘her proper’ hands in 1754. The decoration of the folly took her 261 days to complete with shells from all over the world which were provided by the various Captains who left the very important Georgian Harbour at Waterford. A recent scientific examination of the shells which adorn the walls of the Shell House has indentified many exotic and rare varieties from far flung regions of the world’s oceans. There will be loads happening on both days with poetry and photography competition prize giving’s for the local primary and secondary schools, demonstrations and presentations on both days, a business panel of Abbeyfeale people on the Friday night on stage along with music, song and dance and of course Marty Morrissey keeping the whole thing going. Abbeyfeale Community Council would also like to thank Darragh Murphy of The Cellar Bar and Tomás O Connell of Tomás TJ’s Bar for their donations on the evening of Friday, February 24 following their respective Pool Night and Quiz Night fundraisers which kick-started the month long Community Fundraiser Initiative. Bank of Ireland have confirmed that they will match the first €1,000 raised. The Great Southern Trail reopened last week-end following work by Limerick City & County Council and their Sub-Contractors to repair the collapsed section of Track 1.5Km from Abbeyfeale Railway Station. It was very much to the delight of all the Walkers / Hikers / Runners / Cyclists who had for the previous few weeks being unable to proceed beyond that point due to the dangers of the collapsed section. Very positive feedback from everyone following the re-opening! Our next monthly meeting will take place in Leen’s Hotel on Thursday, March 9 at 7.30pm.

ABBEYFEALE: GATEWAY TO THE KINGDOM: Jim McCarthy, Kilconlea Upr was honoured this week in the Sunday Business Post guide to 101 Great Irish Restaurants’ for his Chart House Restaurant in Dingle. We also had another Abbeyfeale connection making waves on Sunday last when Ireland beat France in the ladies rugby. The Sheehans of Knocknasna were represented by their niece from Co. Meath on the team.

WAKE IN THE WEST’: The Abbeyfeale Drama Group production of the comedy ‘ A wake in the west’ which has drawn to a close took the place by storm over the past few weeks. Our very popular curate Fr. Joe Foley was the surprise turn of the evening with his stetescope , thermometer and black bag but it is his bedside manner and hands on diagnosing that could lead to a career change should he ever suffer a mid life crisis. Star of the show undoubtedly was the corpse himself. Pat Scannell who suffered through being assaulted, laid upon, straddled and manhandled and who didn’t blink as much as an eye for all the time he was the focus of attention. They say laughter is the best medicine and if that is so there won’t be a patient in any waiting room for the next month –blame Dr. Joe and Co for the downturn in business!

ABBEYFEALE COMMUNITY ALERT: Congratulations to our assistant secretary Mary Mc Arthur on her performance in Tournafulla’s Strictly Come Dancing. Be sure and call to meet the committee members who have a stand at the Expo this weekend. Irish motorists have been urged to be on their guard amid a fraudulent motor tax scam. People paying motor tax online have been warned against sharing their details via email. According to the Irish Independent, some of those who had renewed their motor tax online, received emails afterwards claiming there was a problem. The publication reports that they are then asked to confirm the details about their car and provide their billing details. The email claims the payment for motor tax did not go through. The recipient is asked to confirm the vehicle registration number and owner information. The Motor Tax website urged customers to be aware of the scam, stating on their website:“ This Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport have become aware of fraudulent emails purporting to come from the department seeking vehicle details and billing information from vehicle owners in connection with their last motor tax transaction.” “Anyone who provided personal information in response to these fraudulent emails should contact their bank or credit card company immediately.”Like our Face Book page to receive regular updates on Abbeyfeale Community Alert.

ABBEYFEALE ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE: A public meeting will be held in St Ita’s Hall on next Monday, February 20 at 7pm to discuss arrangements for this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade. Anyone with any suggestions on how to improve the parade, or willing to assist in organizing the event is asked to attend.

A church gate collection will be held before all Masses on Saturday and Sunday February 25 /26 to help defray the costs of the parade.

The parade on St Patrick’s Day will start at Mountmahon at 4pm and will be led by the Rathkeale Brass Band. It will proceed down Main Street and past the reviewing stand in The Square. Prizes will be awarded for Best Float, Best Youth Entry and Best Dressed Window. Further details next week.

ABBEYFEALE COMMUNITY COUNCIL (ACC): Chairman Maurice O’Connell reports: Abbeyfeale Community Council are delighted to announce that Street Lights have been fitted and are in the process of being connected along the new stretch of footpath leading to the Great Southern Trail and that Contractors are busy repairing the collapsed section of trail 1.5Km from the old Railway Station. Both jobs due to be completed and ready within 1-2 weeks. A large crowd turned up at last Thursday nights AGM and monthly meetings which were held back to back in Leen’s Hotel. There was good news that extra funding has come the way of the Christmas Lights Committee who are currently in the process of buying new Xmas lights for Abbeyfeale. There are a number of funding applications being prepared for planned projects in and around the Abbeyfeale area which the various groups and clubs involved are hoping will give them the chance of tapping into the European LEADER Funding Project. The ongoing urgency for the locating of a new and suitable burial ground for the Abbeyfeale Community took a step closer towards the end of last week when an official from Limerick City and County Council spent most of a day in the area investigating the potential of a number of possible sites. We will now have to wait a number of months before the results of the preliminary research and testing are known.

Abbeyfeale Enterprise Expo has drawn huge attention from all kinds of businesses / Clubs / Organisations with only a limited number of Exhibit Tables remaining for the March 03 and 04 event. Anyone interested in exhibiting at this major community get-together should get in contact with staff at Bank of Ireland in Abbeyfeale asap to book their place. It’s free to exhibit and it’s free to enter on the night!!!

MAUREENS’ TRIPS: Day Trip to the Workhouse in Portumna on Sunday, March 5. We are travelling out West. Visitors enter the workhouse via the waiting room, the actual room people came through seeking admission to the workhouse. ANNIVERSARY OF FENIAN RISING: The 150th Commemorations will take place on the weekend of Sunday, March 5 in Ardagh. A visual history display will run all weekend in the hall. There will be an Irish Rambling House on the Saturday evening and then on Sunday the walk of the Fenians will be re enacted and followed by a Historical Fair which will include Cross Roads Dancing, Pony and Trap rides, Skittles, Horse Shoe Throwing, Pitch and Toss, Sheaf Tosssing and a mini food and craft market. The St Kierans Heritage Association have published a commemorative booklet. Author Mary Kury €5.

CATHCHING YOUR BREATH IN GLENSTSAL: A one-day workshop of gentle movement, breath, chant and meditation Glenstal Abbey, Murroe Saturday, February 25 from 9.30am – 5pm. Fee €85, includes workshop, materials, lunch, teas and coffees. Workshop Leader, Niall Kelly is a certified Alexander Technique teacher who has been teaching since 2004.
