The Great Southern Trail

The Southern Trail Greenway starts close to the Palatine museum in Rathkeale County Limerick. and travels along the old north Kerry railway line as far as the Kerry Border just outside Abbeyfeale.  In total its 35km long passing through Ardagh- Newcastlewest and the village of panamanic Templeglantine . Its surface is suitable for walking and biding it also has a fiber optic cable running running under the bed of the line and is a vital part of Iarnoad Eireanns Communications System. it offers people an opportunity to Explore West Limerick Rail Heritage at a Leisurely Pace and to stop stop off in the towns along the route and further enhance the tourist potential of west Limerick.  it is envisaged that the Trail will continue into Listowel and ultimately onto tralee in County Kerry as its final destination.

Edward (Ned) died at Kerry General Hospital. Beloved husband of the late Tess (nee Cahill). Deeply regretted by his loving daughters Triona (Costello, Tralee), Colette (Murtagh, Cloghan, Co.Offaly), Edelle (O’Dwyer, Nenagh, Co.Tipperary), brother Tom, sisters Kathleen, Noreen, Bridie, Anne, and Claire, cousin John Michael, sons-in-law Declan, Ken, and Brian, grandchildren Graham, Jack, Adam, Kayleigh, Holly, Orla, Alanna, and Amy-Louis, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces, relatives, cousins, neighbours, and friends.

Reposing at Harrnett’s Funeral Home, Abbeyfeale on Thursday the 19th of June from 6pm to 8pm with removal at 8pm to St. Brigid’s Church, Duagh. Requiem Mass on Friday the 20th of June at 11am followed by burial in Springmount Cemetery, Duagh

Congratulations to Catriona O’Connor and Kenneth Burke who got married in Abbeyfeale Church on Fri 20th June.

The Great Southern Trail

The Great Southern Trail (GST) is a free amenity for walking, cycling, running and hiking.Accessible from the rear of the Railway Bar, it is situated on the outskirts of town on the Athea road.It stretches 3km westward to the Kerry border and 35km eastward linking Abbeyfeale with Newcastlewest and Rathkeale.One encounters bridges, streams, woods, a tunnel, various flora, fauna, and wild birds.The trail was originally the Limerick to Tralee railway line. The Abbeyfeale station opened 20 Dec 1880 and officially closed 3 Nov 1975.A bike hire and collection service is available from Pedal Persuits. Contact Jim:+353868134061.
