CHRISTMAS PARTY:  Knocknasna NS. will be hosting a morning filled with drama, music, poetry and song along with festive carols to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Scoil Naomh Pádraig. A book containing lots of memorabilia of past and present students will be available to purchase on the day. CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR FOR SIMON: Scoil Mháthair Dé are holding a Christmas Craft Fair in the school on Wednesday, December 20 starting at 11.00 a.m.  On the day there will be a cake sale and refreshments will also be served.  All proceeds with go to the Simon Community (Homeless).  All Welcome.

LETTER FROM PARISH PRIEST:  Dear Parishioners:  At a recent meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council I proposed a change of time for the Weekend Mass times. This is for several reasons: Over the past few years the number of priests serving in the parish and in the surrounding parishes has decreased significantly. 10 years ago there were 7 priests ministering in the Pastoral Area (Abbeyfeale, Athea, TournafullaMountcollins & Templeglantine). Now there are just 3 priests with no resident priest in Tournafulla – Mountcollins. When I was appointed parish priest of Abbeyfeale I was also appointed as parish priest of Athea.  Fr Brendan Duggan is resident in Athea and works in the parish there.  I am grateful for his presence and all the work that he undertakes.  The new Mass schedule will allow Fr Brendan and I to cover weekend Masses in the event of one of us having to be away from the parish.  This will happen at holiday time, or if one of us takes ill, or as in my case having to attend meetings in the diocese or elsewhere in my role as Vicar General of the diocese.  The new Mass schedule will see the Saturday evening Vigil Mass in Abbeyfeale move from 7.00p.m to 6.30pm and the Sunday morning 9.30a.m Mass move to 9.15a.m.  The 12 noon Mass is unchanged.  In Athea,  the Sunday morning 11.00a.m. Mass will move to 10.30a.m. The Pastoral Council are supportive of the proposal and I thank them for their advice and guidance. The new Mass schedule will begin on the first weekend of January. All Mass intentions booked for the 7.00p.m. and the 9.30a.m will transfer to the new Mass times.  Mass times in both parishes will be reviewed annually.  Baptism: Because of the change of time for the Saturday evening Mass to 6.30p.m Baptisms on Saturday evenings will now be celebrated at 5.30p.m. We recommend that families come to the church at 5p.m so that all photographs can be completed before the service.  Fr. CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE: A recording of the annual Carol Service which took place in the Church of the Assumption on December 3 last will be broadcast on WL102fm on Thursday, December 21 from 7-8pm.  It will feature the senior church choir, the five national schools, Riona Curtin and Helen Hausenfuss and the Lost Souls.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION:  Following a meeting of Abbeyfeale Community Council it has been unanimously agreed to hold a Public Consultation on the completed research and proposed plans on the Convent Building in Abbeyfeale at the Glórach Theatre on Thursday, December 28 at 7pm. This is timed specifically to allow as many people as possible including those home on holidays the opportunity to view the research and proposed plans presented by ACC and to get feedback from everyone attending on what they feel might work best at that location and suggestions on how to source funding. It’s all about saving an iconic building and bringing jobs back into Abbeyfeale and the wider Community. Refreshments Served. All are Welcome.
WEST LIMERICK HERITAGE NETWORK JOURNAL:  The Networks second journal is now on sale in local shops and pubs.  This Journal would make an ideal gift, especially for family members, far from home this Christmas.  It comprises 32 articles relating to local history and local people. CANTATA:  The performance by the students of Scoil Mháthair Dé of a Christmas Cantata in the Church of the Assumption last Thursday was a credit to everyone involved and especially their director Mrs. O’Callaghan.  It told the Christmas Story through narration,  music and song and a recording of the Cantata will be broadcast on WL102 fm on Christmas night from 8-9pm.

GLÓRACH NOTES:  The festive season season is almost upon us but planning for the New Year is well underway here at the Glórach.  On Monday, January 1 our Bingo nights return at the usual time of 8.30 pm, this has been a tremendously successful venture so far and hopefully will continue in a similar vein in 2018.  On Wednesday,  January 3 we will be screening the 2015 film, Brooklyn.  Based on the Colm Tóibín novel, and starring Saoirse Ronan, the film offers a wonderful snapshot of 1950s Ireland and the experience of a young emigrant to New York.  The screening takes place at 8 pm and all are welcome.  Later on in the month we will be having an international concert on Thursday, January 18, with an array of fantastic musicians lined up for the night.  On the drama front, rehearsals are well underway for the production of the Sam Cree play, Second Honeymoon.  Presented by the Abbeyside players, under the direction of Merce Hobson, this comedy will have you rolling in the aisles with laughter when it takes to the Glórach Stage in the New Year.  Plenty ahead of us, but right now we can allow ourselves a little break and a time of reflection, and just extend a huge thanks to all who have supported us throughout the year.  From all involved at the Glórach Theatre, Nollaig Shona agus Athbliain faoi mhaise Daoibh go léir.   Much to look forward to, for any queries or bookings don’t hesitate to call 0871383940.

A NEW RESPONSE TO ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR ( ASBO) Anti Social behaviour is when a person acts in a way that causes or, in the circumstances, is likely to cause someone harassment, significant or persistent alarm, distress, fear or intimidation, or impairs their use or enjoyment of their property in a significant or persistent way.  Examples of anti social behaviour are intimidation, abusive or threatening behaviour and vandalism.  If you are affected you should contact Abbeyfeale Garda Station 068 30010.    The Gardai may issue a behaviour warning to the perpetrator, if they fail to obey the warning it may result in a behaviour order from the courts. Information taken from a public information leaflet published by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.  Limerick County Council also operate a 24 hour free phone number 1800 283 064 dedicated for Anti Social Behaviour reporting.

FOURTH ANNUAL CONNIE HARNETT MEMORIAL SWIM:  The fourth annual swim takes place in Ballybunion on Monday, January 1 at 1pm.  Funds raised will go to the Cardiology Unit in Crumlin Childrens’ Hospital with donations being made to the Hope Foundation and the Lourdes Youth Group.  There will be a raffle on the day and hot food will be served in Thomasins, Lisselton.

COMMUNITY ALERT:  The Abbeyfeale Community Alert committee would like to offer all our patrons a very happy, safe and healthy Christmas and New Year.  Please keep an eye on elderly neighbours, it need only be a telephone call or just dropping in for a few minutes on your way home from work but showing that you care could mean the world to someone.  If you have been a victim of crime call the crime victims helpline on Freephone 116 006 between 10—5.30pm Monday to Friday.  The minute you buy something in the line of electrical goods, machinery, bicycles, quads find the serial no. and record it even if it was only on a sticker on the inside door of a press.  Muintir Na Tire have a log book for sale for just a fiver that you can use to make a record of all you possess and they are available from any member of Abbeyfeale Community Alert.  If you see anything that makes you wonder if thieves are casing the area like a car that seems to be travelling around several times ring Abbeyfeale Station on 068 30010.  If the Gardai on duty are out on patrol the call will be patched through to NCW who will call the car back to town.  Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company and this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80.  If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65.    If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56.  This works out cheaper that the rent of a landline which is currently €25 per month.   The installing company are required to provide identification on their equipment, their vans and their staff and before you admit anyone to your house you should ask for this identification.  The company also offer a button which can be installed near the front and back doors for a once off payment – this is nothing to do with either Pobal or Abbeyfeale Community Alert and is just between the installing company and the client.  The idea is that it offers extra security when answering the door.  If you leave the house close windows, turn lights on and maybe invest in a timer for them.  Now is the time to prepare for winter so make sure you have draught excluders around windows and doors, outside lights working, a supply of batteries, a couple of hot water bottles, know where the stop cock is for the water supply and above all get your chimney cleaned. If you are going for a walk or cycle wear a hi viz jacket and bring a light – in this murky weather it makes the roads so much safer for everyone.  We constantly update our FB page with local alerts and information on keeping safe so do keep an eye on that. FUNDRAISER FOR FR. MARTIN MCCORMACK:  An Afternoon Tea Dance will take place at Fr. Casey’s Clubhouse on Sunday, January 14 to raise funds for Fr. Martin McCormack’s Projects in Swaziland.  Fr. Martin, who is from Ballydesmond is a member of the Salesian Missionaries based in Pallaskenry.  Music will be provided by Sheila Fitzgerald and Mike Sheehan and Ted McCarthy so a great afternoon’s dancing is assured to shake down the excesses of the Christmas.  Admission is only €5 and a raffle will be held.

CHRISTMAS WALK:  The annual Christmas Walk along the Great Southern Trail Greenway will take place on Wednesday, December 27 at 12.30p.m.. Assembly is at the newly opened Longcourt House Hotel (formerly the Courtenay Lodge), St. Mary’s Road, Newcastle West. The hotel is on the N21 and the public bus services stop alongside it. Walkers will be transferred by courtesy coach to Barnagh from where they will walk the 6 miles [10km], all downhill and mostly along the old railway, back to the Longcourt House where they can enjoy seasonal mince pies, whipped cream and tea/coffee at their leisure. All walkers must wear visibility vests as the final section is through the streets of Newcastle West and involves crossing the busy N21 which must be crossed at the zebra crossing close to the hotel. Cyclists, with visibility gear, helmets and lights, are also welcome and we suggest that they also meet at the hotel at 12.30p.m. and cycle outwards along the Greenway for approximately one hour to Barnagh or beyond and then return in time to enjoy the refreshments. GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL HISTORY:  As Christmas is coming a nice gift to oneself or to family/friends would be the  Great Southern Trail Limited’s newly published “Limerick & Kerry Railway: Twilight Years” by Liam O’Mahony which is laden with information about the Greenway’s railway history. It is not alone a personal memoir by Liam of the 1950′s to 1980′s railway finale but also reproduces several historic documents. These include a list of the 300 or so shareholders (many of which names are still to be found locally) in the Rathkeale & Newcastle Junction Railway Company which built the line to those towns 150 years ago. Another historic gem which is included is a chapter from “Through the Green Isle”; a Victorian era travel guide which extolled the historic attractions of Adare, Askeaton, Foynes, Ballybunion and Ardfert along with the then newly operational Lartigue railway in Listowel. Liam’s book is very well illustrated with thirty of the photographs being in colour. Twenty full colour railway posters advertising  excursion trains to Dublin, Thurles, Cork, Killarney, Knock Shrine and Listowel Races during the 1950′s to the 1970′s will bring back memories to many.  Copies of the book will be delivered throughout all of Ireland for €15 (inc.postage). ABBEYFEALE FOR AFRICA: The annual cake sale in aid of Fr. Tim Galvin’s Mission in South Sudan was a huge success and we’d like to thank everyone for their support – especially the bakers and jam makers, the helpers and the buyers and Fr. Tony for the use of St. Ita’s Hall.  Fr. Tim recently sent an email and we paraphrase it here; “I’m well thanks. Earlier in the year we had a bad drought. Thanks be to God since the end of July we have received decent rain. The countryside is green now rather than brown. In July opposition forces came to our area and there was fear among us and the people that there would be fighting. We evacuated the parish and closed the school for one week. The opposition forces passed by on their way to Ethiopia. Thankfully nothing bad happened. No fighting took place and we returned to the parish and reopened the school after one week. We started a project here a couple of months ago. We constructed a green house. Then a young man from Watergrashill in Co. Cork who works in Kenya came to put down pipes with drip irrigation. We have planted crops like onions, cabbage, carrots, kale, tomatoes, cowpeas, maize and green peppers. Unfortunately the maize didn’t germinate well, we are still waiting for the green peppers to show themselves but all others are doing well as well as weeds of course.   I’m excited about this project. We get our tomatoes onions from a place in Kenya about 700 kilometres away so you can imagine the carbon footprint of that. GLÓRACH NOTES:  PRO Lorcan Curtin says “Due to the children’s drama show with Jo Jordan taking place at the Glórach on the evening of Monday next, December 18 our next night of Bingo won’t take place until January 1, 2018.  Thanks to everyone who has supported this venture to date, as mentioned before all monies raised from our Monday night Bingo will go towards resurfacing of the Car Park and also towards the insulation of the Glórach building.  Thanks to all who attended our screening last Wednesday of the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet.  Often cited as the finest adaptation of the Shakespearean classic, it was easy to see why, with two radiant leads, rich colours throughout and extremely well shot sword fighting scenes.  We are scheduled to return in the New Year with a more recent release, the acclaimed 2015 film, Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan, whilst on the music front, much interest has been expressed in the Sean Keane concert, which will be taking place on Friday, May 4 next year.  Much to look forward to, for any queries or bookings don’t hesitate to call 0871383940.

COMMUNITY ALERT:  Please keep an eye on elderly neighbours, it need only be a telephone call or just dropping in for a few minutes on your way home from work but showing that you care could mean the world to someone.  If you have been a victim of crime call the crime victims helpline on Freephone 116 006 between 10—5.30pm Monday to Friday.  The minute you buy something in the line of electrical goods, machinery, bicycles, quads find the serial no. and record it even if it was only on a sticker on the inside door of a press.  Muintir Na Tire have a log book for sale for just a fiver that you can use to make a record of all you possess and they are available from any member of Abbeyfeale Community Alert.  If you see anything that makes you wonder if thieves are casing the area like a car that seems to be travelling around several times ring Abbeyfeale Station on 068 30010.  If the Gardai on duty are out on patrol the call will be patched through to NCW who will call the car back to town.  There was a glut of calls from oversees in the last week, this is a scam and if you answer or call back you will be charged premium rates so only answer calls from numbers you recognise.  Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company and this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80.  If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65.    If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56.  This works out cheaper that the rent of a landline which is currently €25 per month.   The installing company are required to provide identification on their equipment, their vans and their staff and before you admit anyone to your house you should ask for this identification.  The company also offer a button which can be installed near the front and back doors for a once off payment – this is nothing to do with either Pobal or Abbeyfeale Community Alert and is just between the installing company and the client.  The idea is that it offers extra security when answering the door.  If you leave the house close windows, turn lights on and maybe invest in a timer for them.  Now is the time to prepare for winter so make sure you have draught excluders around windows and doors, outside lights working, a supply of batteries, a couple of hot water bottles, know where the stop cock is for the water supply and above all get your chimney cleaned. If you are going for a walk or cycle wear a hi viz jacket and bring a light – in this murky weather it makes the roads so much safer for everyone.  We constantly update our FB page with local alerts and information on keeping safe so do keep an eye on that. FUNDRAISER FOR FR. MARTIN MCCORMACK:  An Afternoon Tea Dance will take place at Fr. Casey’s Clubhouse on Sunday, January 14 to raise funds for Fr. Martin McCormack’s Projects in Swaziland.  Fr. Martin, who is from Ballydesmond is a member of the Salesian Missionaries based in Pallaskenry.  Music will be provided by Sheila Fitzgerald and Mike Sheehan, Ted McCarthy and also the Nightingales so a great afternoon’s dancing is assured to shake down the excesses of the Christmas.  Admission is only €5 and a raffle will be held.

CHRISTMAS WALK:  The annual Christmas Walk along the Great Southern Trail Greenway will take place on Wednesday, December 27 at 12.30p.m.. Assembly is at the newly opened Longcourt House Hotel (formerly the Courtenay Lodge), St. Mary’s Road, Newcastle West. The hotel is on the N21 and the public bus services stop alongside it. Walkers will be transferred by courtesy coach to Barnagh from where they will walk the 6 miles [10km], all downhill and mostly along the old railway, back to the Longcourt House where they can enjoy seasonal mince pies, whipped cream and tea/coffee at their leisure. All walkers must wear visibility vests as the final section is through the streets of Newcastle West and involves crossing the busy N21 which must be crossed at the zebra crossing close to the hotel. Cyclists, with visibility gear, helmets and lights, are also welcome and we suggest that they also meet at the hotel at 12.30p.m. and cycle outwards along the Greenway for approximately one hour to Barnagh or beyond and then return in time to enjoy the refreshments. GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL HISTORY:  As Christmas is coming a nice gift to oneself or to family/friends would be the  Great Southern Trail Limited’s newly published “Limerick & Kerry Railway: Twilight Years” by Liam O’Mahony which is laden with information about the Greenway’s railway history. It is not alone a personal memoir by Liam of the 1950′s to 1980′s railway finale but also reproduces several historic documents. These include a list of the 300 or so shareholders (many of which names are still to be found locally) in the Rathkeale & Newcastle Junction Railway Company which built the line to those towns 150 years ago. Another historic gem which is included is a chapter from “Through the Green Isle”; a Victorian era travel guide which extolled the historic attractions of Adare, Askeaton, Foynes, Ballybunion and Ardfert along with the then newly operational Lartigue railway in Listowel. Liam’s book is very well illustrated with thirty of the photographs being in colour. Twenty full colour railway posters advertising  excursion trains to Dublin, Thurles, Cork, Killarney, Knock Shrine and Listowel Races during the 1950′s to the 1970′s will bring back memories to many.  Copies of the book will be delivered throughout all of Ireland for €15 (inc.postage). CHRISTMAS LIGHTS:  Well done to the Christmas Lights committee who did such a great job of lighting the town this Christmas and to Doody Engineering for the wonderful Christmas tree which they made and which lights up the Square under the all seeing eye of Fr. Casey.  Thank you to Kostal who sponsored the tree which will be a focal point in the town for many a long year to come.  There was a huge crowd in the Square on Friday evening last to greet Santa who arrived on a sleigh to great glee from both the adults and children present.  The PRO of the Christmas Lights committee sent the following report:  “Thanks to Denis Collins, Jimmy Cahill, Marius Winncki, Maurice O’Connell, Paul Doody, Pakie Devine, Donal Murphy and his son Eoin Murphy who worked tirelessly to install the new Lights – all on their spare time and on a voluntary basis.  We would like to thank Fr Tony Mullins and Ann O’Meara for helping us on a weekly basis while we were promoting our Christmas Events.

ABBEYFEALE COMMUNITY COUNCIL: Chairperson of Maurice O’ Connell expressed his delight at the turnout and support of the local Community for the switching on the Abbeyfeale Christmas Lights on a chilly but clear Friday night. “The excitement that emanated from the almost 2000 strong crowd of Children and Adults that packed the Square was so contagious you’d have to be made of ice not to get caught up in the enjoyment of it all” exclaimed Maurice. “The chorus of Wows that were heard from all age groups throughout the crowd when the lights were switched on and especially the newly designed Christmas Tree was a moment well worth waiting for” he said.  This was followed shortly afterwards by Santa arriving into town on his Sleigh, escorted by a Garda Car and Fire Engine.  Santa told Chairperson Maurice that the amazed look on children’s faces as he, Santa, pulled up and waved to everyone will be cherished by him for many years to come.  The Council would like to offer sincere gratitude to members of Abbeyfeale Community Council, Abbeyfeale Christmas Lights Committee, Abbeyfeale Tidy Towns, and Abbeyfeale Town Park. GLÓRACH NEWS: The mood is buoyant here at the Glórach Theatre after finishing on such a high last Thursday with our production of The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley.  No rest for the wicked however, and it’s shoulders to the wheel once again with various events that will take up us to the holiday period.  The last Bingo session of 2017 takes place on Monday, December 11 at 8.30 pm and we will be resuming again on New Year’s Day.  On Wednesday, December 6, we will be screening the 1968 film, Romeo and Juliet.  Directed by Franco Zeffirelli, and starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey in the title roles, the film is regarded by many critics as the finest adaptation of this Shakespearean tragedy.  Many readers may have studied this drama in school, so here’s a chance to refresh your memories of one of the most enduring love stories of all time, a love that transcended the feuding between the Capulet and Montague families, and while ultimately ending in tragedy, it was a love that was not in vain.  The film begins at 8 pm and all are most welcome.

NEWS FROM BRUACH NA CARRAIGE ROCKCHAPEL:  The Rockchapel  Comhaltas based group Ceoltoiri Sliabh Luachra will present “Pulses of a Thousand Years” at Siamsa Tire on Sunday, December 10 beginning at 8pm.  This is a traditional music journey through the history of Ireland from the arrival of An Tuaithe De Danann to the 1916 rising. It will present many old tunes starting with the first tune written in Ireland from the book of William Ballett published in 1583 and many of our old and forgotten dances. All proceeds will go to Brosna Parish Church renovation fund.  Then on Thursday, December 14 at 8pm. Bruach Na Carraige will host a night of Christmas baking with celebrity chef Frank Moynihan.

CHRISTMAS WALK:  The annual Christmas Walk along the Great Southern Trail Greenway will take place on Wednesday, December 27 at 12.30p.m.. Assembly is at the newly opened Longcourt House Hotel (formerly the Courtenay Lodge), St. Mary’s Road, Newcastle West. The hotel is on the N21 and the public bus services stop alongside it. Walkers will be transferred by courtesy coach to Barnagh from where they will walk the 6 miles [10km], all downhill and mostly along the old railway, back to the Longcourt House where they can enjoy seasonal mince pies, whipped cream and tea/coffee at their leisure. All walkers must wear visibility vests as the final section is through the streets of Newcastle West and involves crossing the busy N21 which must be crossed at the zebra crossing close to the hotel. Cyclists, with visibility gear, helmets and lights, are also welcome and we suggest that they also meet at the hotel at 12.30p.m. and cycle outwards along the Greenway for approximately one hour to Barnagh or beyond and then return in time to enjoy the refreshments. COMMUNITY ALERT:  If you have been a victim of crime call the crime victims helpline on Freephone 116 006 between 10—5.30pm Monday to Friday.  Several members attended the Community Alert Newcastlewest Garda District meeting in the Devon Inn this week.  Diarmuid from Muintir na Tire told us about the two forty foot articulated trucks full of stolen property that was recovered in Tipperary this summer and how only seven items were reunited with their owners because people had not recorded serial numbers.  It was emphasised that the minute we buy something in the line of electrical goods, machinery, bicycles, quads find the serial no. and record it even if it was only on a sticker on the inside door of a press.  Muintir Na Tire have a log book for sale for just a fiver that you can use to make a record of all you possess and they are available from any member of Abbeyfeale Community Alert.  If you see anything that makes you wonder if thieves are casing the area like a car that seems to be travelling around several times ring Abbeyfeale Station on 068 30010.  If the Gardai on duty are out on patrol the call will be patched through to NCW who will call the car back to town.  We would like to welcome our new Superintendent Eamon O’Neill to the NCW Garda District.  Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company, this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80.  If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65.    If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56.  This works out cheaper that the rent of a landline which is currently €25 per month.   The installing company are required to provide identification on their equipment, their vans and their staff and before you admit anyone to your house you should ask for this identification.  The company also offer a button which can be installed near the front and back doors for a once off payment – this is nothing to do with either Pobal or Abbeyfeale Community Alert and is just between the installing company and the client.  The idea is that it offers extra security when answering the door.  If you leave the house close windows, turn lights on and maybe invest in a timer for them.  Now is the time to prepare for winter so make sure you have draught excluders around windows and doors, outside lights working, a supply of batteries, a couple of hot water bottles, know where the stop cock is for the water supply and above all get your chimney cleaned. If you are going for a walk or cycle wear a hi viz jacket and bring a light – in this murky weather it makes the roads so much safer for everyone.  We constantly update our FB page with local alerts and information on keeping safe so do keep an eye on that. GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL HISTORY:  As Christmas is coming a nice gift to oneself or to family/friends would be the  Great Southern Trail Limited’s newly published “Limerick & Kerry Railway: Twilight Years” by Liam O’Mahony which is laden with information about the Greenway’s railway history. It is not alone a personal memoir by Liam of the 1950′s to 1980′s railway finale but also reproduces several historic documents. These include a list of the 300 or so shareholders (many of which names are still to be found locally) in the Rathkeale & Newcastle Junction Railway Company which built the line to those towns 150 years ago. Another historic gem which is included is a chapter from “Through the Green Isle”; a Victorian era travel guide which extolled the historic attractions of Adare, Askeaton, Foynes, Ballybunion and Ardfert along with the then newly operational Lartigue railway in Listowel. Liam’s book is very well illustrated with thirty of the photographs being in colour. Twenty full colour railway posters advertising  excursion trains to Dublin, Thurles, Cork, Killarney, Knock Shrine and Listowel Races during the 1950′s to the 1970′s will bring back memories to many.  Copies of the book will be delivered throughout all of Ireland for €15 (inc.postage). PUBLIC ORDER:  Should you be affected by or witness an anti-social event – on the street, in your property, at your business,  in the Town Park etc. -  it is recommended that you call the 24 hour line in Newcastle west  on 069 20650 to log your complaint.   This type of low level nuisance crime needs to be reported so that the Gardai can be made aware that it is happening.  So, if someone walks out in front of your car, or you see someone in your garden or on your wall make the call.  Limerick County Council also operate a 24 hour free phone number 1800 283 064 dedicated for Anti Social Behaviour reporting.
