CHANGES IN THE DIOCESE: Bishop Brendan Leahy has said that rapid changes necessary to deal with the decline in clergy numbers means we must look towards lay leadership in parishes and work closer together in the church. He said that lay people will be leading a range of services going forwards, from prayers at funerals to the parish preparation of children for the sacraments. Fr. Seamus Madigan whose aunt was the late Betty McCarthy, Knockbrack will be returning to the Diocese after his years ministering with the chaplaincy services to the Defence Forces where he served in recent years as Head Chaplin. Fr Tony Mullins whose real title is Canon will be continuing as Vicar General and Co-Parish Priest in the Pastoral Unit of Abbeyfeale, Athea, Templeglantine, Tournafulla/
Mountcollins, and on top of all that work has been appointed as Episcopal Vicar for Pastoral Ministry and Mission in the Diocese. Fr. Willie Russell, Co-Parish Priest of the Pastoral Unit made up of the parishes of Rathkeale, Ballingarry/Granagh, Knockaderry/Cloncagh has been replaced by Fr. Derek Leonard and will now join our Fr. Tony to be Co-Parish Priest here in the Pastoral Unit.. Fr Russell will reside in Abbeyfeale. Fr, Shoji’s friend Fr. Robin has been recessed to his Diocese and will be replaced by another priest from that Diocese.

A STORY OF INTEREST TO WEST LIMERICK: The story of Kay Carr from Ballydonoghue who met Namir Kamir when she nursed his mother in Iraq and who had to leave when war broke out, waited for him to escape and married him was broadcast on Horizons on Radio Kerry last Sunday morning after the 9am news. They bought a shop beside Fealesbridge Creamery and set up home on the Limerick/ Kerry border where their two children were born. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament after 10am Mass until 8pm every Friday. Fr Denis and Fr Tony are assisted in the overall running of the five churches in the pastoral area by the Pastoral Area Council. The Pastoral Area Council is comprised of representative of the five churches in the area along with the priests of the area. There are 16 Pastoral Areas in the diocese. In the very near future there will be just two priests serving in each pastoral area in the diocese. In recent weeks parishes have been returning to basket collection at weekend masses. Here in the parish of Abbeyfeale, we plan to return to the basket collection in the near future. For this to happen efficiently we need six people per mass to help with the collections. We are seeking volunteers to help. If you can oblige, please leave your name and mass preference into the sacristy after Mass. We thank you in anticipation of your help. Some of the changes taking place in the parish of Abbeyfeale include new arrangements for funerals and baptisms. After consultation with the Pastoral Area Council, and the parish councils in each of the five parishes, it was agreed, that due to the number of Sunday Masses celebrated in the five churches in the area, it will no longer be possible to have funeral Masses on a Sunday. Baptisms in Abbeyfeale will be celebrated on the first Saturday of each month at 5.00pm. Also, on the second Sunday of the month after the 12noon Mass. Baptisms in Athea will be celebrated on the third Saturday of the month during the summertime at 2.30p m and the third Sunday of the month in wintertime at 12noon. Be very cautious of a person who doesn’t share a recent face picture with you, particularly after you have shared yours. If they don’t want to share a face picture, consider asking them to go on a live video call (many apps have this option built in so you don’t have to share your mobile number). Ask for their social media handles. Do you have friends in common on Instagram or Facebook? Be wary of new accounts with low follower count and few posts. Let friends know where you’re going – send a text to a trusted friend or in a group chat, include your live location so you can be found if you need help. Meet in a public place first. Take a few minutes to chat and feel confident you want to proceed before going somewhere private. Think before accepting food or drink. Unless you’ve seen them prepare it – it’s best not to accept to avoid being spiked. If an emergency unfolds, call 999. If something happens – report it! It seems that people are being contacted and threatened that pornographic content will be posted in their name. If you get a call contact the Gardai immediately. If you go to the beach leave nothing visible in your car and don’t put stuff in the boot after you park in case you are being observed – do it before you leave home. If you are 65, you live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or if you spend long periods of the day on your own then, because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72. There may be some confusion over the word free - the equipment which costs in the region of €400 is provided free of charge by Pobal as is the first year of monitoring but after that you will be charged by the installing company for the monitoring. I have not included the phone numbers of the committee in this notice but if you want to get a panic button then ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station on 068 30010 and they will contact one of us. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one with a deposit of 6 months payable on the day of installation.
