The following is some advice on protecting your home taken from www.garda.ie;  ‘ Whether you are at home or going out, remember to turn on some lights, use timer switches, lock all doors and windows, use an alarm, store keys away from windows and letter boxes and do not keep large amounts of cash and jewellery in the house.’   If someone does call to your door and you are finding it hard to get rid of them then press your monitor which you should never take off and yes, I have been assured that it is waterproof.  Please be careful when answering the phone to never disclose bank a/c details to anyone purporting to be calling from your phone provider, bank, credit card company etc.  If they want those details over the phone then they are probably not for your good.  Housing Aid for Older People Scheme which is used to improve the condition of an older person’s home is aimed at people 66 years of age and older and is means tested.  People with a disability or who are elderly can apply for a grant to purchase grab rails, a level access shower, access ramps or a stair lift.   Contact 061 496000 for further details. If someone does call to your door or drive into your yard then why not give the Gardai a ring on 06830010 and alert them that these people are around – this is an integral part of our community helping the Gardai to keep us all safe.  Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €66.  Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month.  Please note that this fee is payable in a lump sum each year after year one. ADVICE FROM COMMUNITY ALERT: An elderly man in Limerick has fallen victim to a €2,000 phone scam and Gardaí are warning people to be vigilant about ‘suspicious phone calls that come out of the blue’.  Gardai are advising people about the nature of this particular scam, which saw a man in his 70s at a loss for the significant sum of money.  Gardai said the man received a phone call from another male alleging to be from his bank and reporting that there was unusual activity on his account.   The caller directed the elderly man to go to a post office and send cash to a particular account via telegram.  I, myself, got a call on April 5 from a man with a foreign accent purporting to be from Microsoft and offering to fix my computer. A new phone scam is doing the rounds - and it’s a bit smarter than some of the others, because it looks like it’s an Irish number at first glance. Though it starts with ’087′, the calls are actually originating in Bosnia.  The latest scam out of Australia features the harvesting of personal data when you return a missed call so we cannot emphasise enough to never ring back a missed call unless you recognise it.  Housing Aid for Older People Scheme used to improve the condition of an older person’s home is aimed at people 66 years of age and older and is means tested.  People with a disability or who are elderly can apply for a grant to purchase grab rails, a level access shower, access ramps or a stair lift.   Contact 061 496000 for further details. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company and this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80.  If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65.    If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56.  This works out cheaper that the rent of a landline which is currently €25 per month.  Committee members are Sean Broderick, Micheal O’Kelly N.T., Seamus Stack, Mossie Gleeson, Kathleen Collins, Mary McArthur, Buddy and Brenda Barry, John O’Sullivan, Billy Quirke N.T., Cllr. Francis Foley, Mary Jo O’Connell, James Joy, Denis Collins, Marian Harnett.

The occasion was greatly enhanced by Ireland’s victory over England at Twickenham and the winning of a historic third rugby Grand Slam.  The parade was led by double world boxing and kick-boxing champion, Kori Goad, who received a tremendous reception as she marched down Main Street displaying her championship belts and trophies.  She was followed by members of the Tournafulla Wrenboys dressed in colourful regalia and led by St Patrick who looks more and more like a youthful Paddy Finucane every year!  An assortment of floats, carts, vintage cars, tractors, bicycles, motor bikes, musicians and various local and youth organizations followed on in an imaginative display of pageantry and entertainment.  Prize for best float went to the Men’s Shed while the best decorated window was won by the local St Vincent de Paul shop. The youth award went to Abbeyfeale Rugby Club.  The organizing committee would like to thank the following for their help and support; Main parade sponsors, Twohigs Supervalu, Abbeyfeale, and all the other sponsors. Immaculate College, South Circular Road, Limerick City.  This illustrated lecture will be given by Quency Dougan on ‘The Treaty County Orange Men – Historical notes on Orangeism in Limerick’. Many people are aware that Orangeism is very strong in Northern Ireland and that it also exists in other countries such as the United States of America and in the continent of Africa.  However, very few know that this institution also existed in some of the counties of the South of Ireland. Limerick was one of these counties and Quency Dougan will throw some light on its very interesting existence here, in what is expected to be a very interesting subject. He is a historical consultant from County Armagh, who has written extensively on Orangeism across Ireland and on the anti Home Rule movement and has a particular interest in the subject matters outside the confines of Ulster. He has authored ‘The Armagh Brigade-the formation and sacrifice of the Ulster Volunteers in the Orchard County’ (2010), and ‘Leitrim and the Great War’ (2015). A former columnist for the ‘Belfast Newsletter’, he currently writes for the ‘Orange Standard’ (the newspaper of the Orange Institution) and his work has featured heavily in regional papers and publications across Ireland. His work is featured in the March/April edition of’HistoryIreland’magazine.

Glórach News

The set is up, and most of our energy is now focused on the Abbeyside Players production of the Sam Cree comedy, Second Honeymoon that opens next Wednesday, March 28th.  On the drama front, congratulations to all of the children who took part in the production last Friday, and under the tutelage of Jo Jordan, delivered a superbly entertaining show.  Hopefully they will continue to grace the Glórach stage and maintain the rich dramatic tradition present in this town.  Bingo continues every Monday night, and a special mention to Ann Curtin of the Coffee Pot who donates fresh scones to us each week.  Also coming up next month, there will be a talk and presentation on the Greenway (Great Southern Trail) taking place on Friday 13th April from 8 pm to 10 pm.  For any queries or bookings, don’t hesitate to call 0871383940.

THE TWO LOVES OF GABRIEL FOLEY:  With the inclement weather forcing the rescheduling of the festival, we finally took to the stage at Knockaderry Community Hall on Thursday last with our production of the Jimmy Keary comedy, The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley. It was not without a certain degree of trepidation, given that we had not performed the play since last November and many of the cast members had been involved in different productions since.  We needn’t have worried as all involved gave tremendous performances, eliciting much laughter from the considerable crowd that attended.  It was great to get feedback from adjudicator, Tony McCleane Fay, who gave an in depth analysis on his interpretation of the play and the acting. Lots of positivity, constructive criticism and interesting pointers.  We were also extremely well looked after by the organising committee, and any drama group travelling to Knockaderry can be certain of one thing; they will be well fed!  The finale on Sunday night saw us pick up two awards, with Best Stage Make-Up going to Theresa O’Halloran and Best Stage Management going to Martin Tobin and Lorcan Curtin.  A great experience overall, thank again to the organising committee, the audience that supported us, Seán O’Connell for the immense work he did with the set, and all the cast and crew who gave up their time and gave their all for this one-off event.

It is made up of volunteers, all of whom are giving their time voluntarily helping our Community which is at the heart of who we are.   We continue to provide this voluntary service so that the elderly in our community feel safe in their own homes.  .  The AGM will be held at Leens Hotel on Wednesday, April 11 at 8pm.  New members are very welcome. Ask for Angela; if you are out in company and feel vulnerable there is a new initiative where you can approach a member of staff in a pub, restaurant, and nightclub and ask for Angela.  If you feel isolated and would like a friendly voice on the end of the phone ring the Farm and Rural Stress line any evening between 6-10pm for a chat.  An avalanche of scam calls are hitting some people, only answer a call you recognise and never ring back.

COMMUNITY ALERT:  Abbeyfeale Community Alert, set up in on January 15, 1998 are celebrating 20 years in existence this year.  It is made up of volunteers, all of whom are giving their time voluntarily helping our Community which is at the heart of who we are.   We continue to provide this voluntary service so that the elderly in our community feel safe in their own homes.  A new phone scam is doing the rounds - and it’s a bit smarter than some of the others, because it looks like it’s an Irish number at first glance. Though it starts with ’087′, the calls are actually originating in Bosnia. If you answer or call back, you will be asked to hold while they redirect you to a more expensive number and your credit will be drained or a charge will be added to your phone bill. People have reported getting scam calls from 087 65560811, 087 65563769, 087 65609962 and other Bosnian numbers.
