LAUNCH OF NEW CD: Donie Lyons, singer and musician has a CD on sale in Ann Lyons, Main St. The official launch will take place in Abbeyfeale in the autumn.

SEISIÚN IN TEMPLEGLANTINE: All those in the locality who enjoy a good night of Irish traditional entertainment will welcome the return of the weekly Comhaltas Seisiún show at the Devon Inn everyThursday night at 8.30pm. The show consists of top quality music, song, dance and story provided by a talented group of artistes, many of whom have won All Ireland honours. The traditional show is aimed at both locals and visitors and is very enjoyable. Towards the end of the programme of entertainment there is an informal segment where members of the audience may perform if they so wish.

ST. ITA’S FAITH CAMP: Registration for Faith Camp is taking place in St

Mary’s Boys School on Tuesday, July 18 from 7- 8pm and on Wednesday, July 19 from 8-9pm. The annual St. Ita’s Faith Camp takes place from Tuesday, August 1 – Friday, August 4 2017. Confirmation children especially welcome. We are asking families to host our visiting volunteers this year. We need bed and breakfast accommodation for the volunteers who come from afar – all other meals will be supplied at the School. We are very grateful for your generosity. BEST OF LUCK CHRIS: Young Chris Smith from Abbeyfeale is currently in Turkey playing soccer with the International Junior Regions cup team. Chris, already a star performer with Abbey Utd was chosen to play for Ireland after 6 months of trials and everyone in Abbeyfeale joins with his family in wishing him well over the next week in Istanbul.

HORSE AND PONY RACES A GREAT SUCCESS: The annual Horse and Pony Races was held on a balmy Sunday afternoon at Relihan’s Inch, Kilcara. Relihan’s Inch on the banks of the Feale River must be one of the most beautiful places in the West Limerick/ North Kerry area and last Sunday showed it in all its glory. It was a real family day out with face painting, bouncy castles and pony rides for the young ones, the matches on the big screen along with plenty of thrilling races and all followed by a disco in the big tent for the rest of us. Well done to the hardworking committee and a special shout out to Adrian Harnett and Colm Horgan who erected the race course on a green field site over several hard days last week and who are probably now engaged in dismantling it again and putting it away for another year.

WEST LIMERICK HERITAGE NETWORK: The monthly meeting of West Limerick Heritage Network takes place on Wednesday, July 5 at Newcastle West Community Centre @ 7 .30 pm. All members encouraged to attend. Members are requested to submit, in writing, Places of Interest / Heritage etc in their own locality which they want included for discussion in the forthcoming agenda. This is an important meeting. It is in everyone’s interest to attend. Please take note of change of venue.

FARM SAFETY WEEK: Farm Safety Week will take place this year from July 24- 28. The campaign will focus on a different risk each day. Farmers will be encouraged to take some time during the week to assess the safety of routine tasks. The message for Farm Safety Week is that farm safety is a lifestyle not a slogan.

GRAVEYARD CLEAN: Reilig Ide Naofa Graveyard Mass will take place on Thursday, August 17 @ 7.30pm. Clean up takes place every Tuesday, if you are available some evening please call, all help is greatly appreciated as the graveyard is quite large and needs constant weeding. So come along and join the group. All are welcome.

FIRST AID COURSE: A First Aid course will take place on Saturday, July 8 from 12 noon to 4pm in Rathkeale Community Centre covering all aspects of First Aid including CPR. €20 per person with all proceeds going to WL102fm. Further information 069 66200.

SUMMER CAMPS 2017: West Limerick Resources summer camps are open to children aged 6 to 12 years. Participants must have completed senior infants. Activities include Sports, Games, Dance and Arts & Crafts. All camps are free of charge and healthy snacks and drinks are also provided. Priority is given to those in receipt of Social Welfare. TIMES PAST: Thanks to Jer Kennelly, Knockanure for the following: “The following letter appeared in the Cork Examiner of a recent date:–

Dear Sir—

In the name of our outraged people, I ask space to describe in some faint way, scenes perpetrated in the parish during the past ten hours, under the protection of the force of the Crown. Mr. Hobson, sub-sheriff to this county, at the head of a number of bailiffs, police, &c., started from New castle West, some hour last night, and after visiting several farms along the banks of the Feale, with a return of nulla bona, he ultimately reached the farm of the Widow Connors, on the property of the Hayes, minors, and there seized three old cows, the whole worldly goods of the wretched widow.

After having lodged the fruits of his night’s visit in pound, and after regaling himself and his bailiffs in some of the houses in this town, a start was made for Knockbrack, a place about a mile distance from here, where a family of the name of Harnett, who lived for over 300 years. From this once happy home, this family is now cast on the roadside to make room for the cattle of their landlords, Mr. James Esmonde, J.P., Dromenagh, Borrisokeane, county Tipperary, for one and a half-year’ rent. The arrangements of the police were carried out in the most elaborate manner. There were fifty police and two district-inspectors, one of whom, a Mr. Rice, of Kilfinane, being in supreme command, and I call him a commander par excellence. This officious policeman, after having put his men two or three times through some form of drill, ordered them to fix bayonets, surrounding the house, and take up every strategic position and remove every person who chanced to be near. The doomed man is eighty seven years of age. His poor wife got a stroke of paralysis some few months since. I was there to-day to administer the last sacraments, believing it necessary under the circumstances. Dr. Bolster, of Newcastle, who examined the man, believed him in danger, and ordered that he should not be removed. Still, Mr. Rice deemed it his duty to have me removed by force. At a subsequent stage of the proceedings, the daughter called me to administer thesacrament to her dying parents. I was again pushed back by M. Wright, D.I., Newcastle West, and when he seemed disposed, after my earnest entreaties, to allow me in, a policeman with fixedbayonet rushed up and reminded him of the order given by the superior officer. After the eviction party had passed on from this, to the house of an under tenant, I saw the dying man, and at his urgent request, I undertook to borrow the full rent and costs. Mr. O’Connor, P.L.G., with my authority, made the offer to the landlord, but he was refused. There was no power of redemption, because the tenant’s interest was sold out, and bought in by the landlord. Tonight the poor old man is in his 87th year, is in the very throes of death, his wife is paralysed, and his family dare not go near him, except at the risk of prosecution. This Mr. Esmonde evicted another member of the family for one year’s exorbitant rent on the 24th April, 1884. This honourable man supported his family by manual labour for nearly four years. He then got a position as a guard on the Listowel and Ballybunion Railway, but, after a few days, was killed in the discharge of his duty, adding yet another to the long list of victims of landlord rapacity. This day’s work is only the beginning of Mr. Esmonde’s clearances. He has reduced to the position of caretakers, eight or ten other families, all of whom, with one exception, are able and willing to pay their rents. But because one is unable, all must go. All hold under joint leases. Those tenants have made most liberal offers to Mr. Esmonde. They have made him an offer of 20 years purchase, which is more than he himself paid Mr. Brett for the property, twenty years ago. I could give another fact to prove the extreme harshness of this man, but reserve them for another occasion. I trust I have said enough to prove the necessity that exists for combination among the tenants of Ireland. WILLIAM CASEY, P.P.

The card entitles the carrier to the same access to healthcare as locals when travelling in an EU or EEA country. Defibrillators in Abbeyfeale are located at the Search and Rescue Headquarters and also at Fr. Casey’s, the Rugby Club and the Soccer grounds. Should you be affected by or witness an anti-social event – on the street, in your property, at your business, in the Town Park etc. - it is recommended that you call the 24 hour line in Newcastlewest on 069 20650 to log your complaint. You can also log your complaint on the 24 hr free phone no 1800 283064. This type of low level nuisance crime needs to be reported so that the Gardai can be made aware that it is happening. So, if someone walks out in front of your car, or you see someone in your garden or on your wall make the call. We have been asked to remind people that once they reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 then they are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert but there will be a monitoring fee to be paid yearly to the installing company which is currently in the region of €65. If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a monthly fee of approx. €12 on top of the monitoring fee. If you are a victim of or have witnessed domestic abuse then log onto whatwouldyoudo.ieWe constantly update our FB page with local alerts and information on keeping safe so do keep an eye on that. ANNIVERSARY: Canon Neville celebrated the 65th anniversary of his ordination on June 22 last by saying the 10am Mass. He received a rousing round of applause from the congregation who are all so appreciative of the fact that we have a daily Mass in Abbeyfeale. Canon Neville always makes himself available to help out in the parish despite the fact that he is enjoying a well-deserved retirement. A Prayer for Priests: Keep them I pray Thee, dearest Lord, Keep them, for they are thine- Thy priests whose lives burn out before Thy consecrated shrine. Keep them for they are in the world though from the world apart, when earthly pleasures tempt, allure, Shelter them in Thy heart. Keep them, and comfort them in hours of loneliness and pain. When all their life is sacrifice for souls seems but in vain. Keep them, and O remember Lord they have no one but Thee Yet they have only human hearts, with human frailty. Keep them as spotless as the Host, that daily, they caress. Their every thought and word and deed, deign, dearest Lord, to bless.

BEST WISHES TO CHRIS SMITH: Chris who plays with Abbeyfeale United and is a grandson of Pa and Mrs. Smith, Collins Park has travelled to Istanbul with the Irish Team to play in the International Junior Regions Cup. We wish him every success.

THE INSPECTORS ARE COMING! The Tidy Towns committee are asking that people would make an extra special effort this week and next brushing the pavements, maybe touching up the paintwork, putting up flower baskets etc. It would be great if we could improve on our marks this year.

1ST. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS FUNDRAISER: The Christmas Lights committee were delighted with the support they received at their first fundraiser to help them light up the town next Christmas. This is something that will benefit everyone – businesses, families, the entire community so it was great to see everyone out and enjoying themselves for a good cause. A big thank you to Mary and Paudie Fitz for the selection of finger food which was enjoyed by all and to Pat Quille for the ‘interesting questions’.

ABBEYFEALE HORSE AND PONY RACES: The annual Abbeyfeale races take place this year by kind permission on the lands of John and Anthony Relihan on Sunday, July 2. ART EXHIBITION: Abbey Art Group are holding an exhibition of their work in the Library from Friday, June 16 – Friday, June 23. The official opening is at 3pm on Friday, June 16 and is open to friends, family and all members of the public. All the Art work on display is by the members who have been attending the classes held on Thursdays at the Adult Education Centre (The Old Tech) under the expert guidance of tutor Maureen Barry Fitzgerald. ABBEYFEALE HORSE AND PONY RACES: The annual Abbeyfeale races take place this year by kind permission on the lands of John and Anthony Relihan on Sunday, July 2. We expect the usual high standard of racing with some of the best and future champions of racing taking part. The hard working committee is busy preparing and we would like to thank all our sponsors for their continued help and support in making this one of the biggest meetings in the Southern region. We are also running a Queen of the Races competition with the winner going on to represent us in the Rose of Tralee qualifying heats.
