ABBEYFEALE ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE: A public meeting will be held in St Ita’s Hall on next Monday, February 20 at 7pm to discuss arrangements for this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade. Anyone with any suggestions on how to improve the parade, or willing to assist in organizing the event is asked to attend.
A church gate collection will be held before all Masses on Saturday and Sunday February 25 /26 to help defray the costs of the parade.
The parade on St Patrick’s Day will start at Mountmahon at 4pm and will be led by the Rathkeale Brass Band. It will proceed down Main Street and past the reviewing stand in The Square. Prizes will be awarded for Best Float, Best Youth Entry and Best Dressed Window. Further details next week.

ABBEYFEALE COMMUNITY COUNCIL (ACC): Chairman Maurice O’Connell reports: Abbeyfeale Community Council are delighted to announce that Street Lights have been fitted and are in the process of being connected along the new stretch of footpath leading to the Great Southern Trail and that Contractors are busy repairing the collapsed section of trail 1.5Km from the old Railway Station. Both jobs due to be completed and ready within 1-2 weeks. A large crowd turned up at last Thursday nights AGM and monthly meetings which were held back to back in Leen’s Hotel. There was good news that extra funding has come the way of the Christmas Lights Committee who are currently in the process of buying new Xmas lights for Abbeyfeale. There are a number of funding applications being prepared for planned projects in and around the Abbeyfeale area which the various groups and clubs involved are hoping will give them the chance of tapping into the European LEADER Funding Project. The ongoing urgency for the locating of a new and suitable burial ground for the Abbeyfeale Community took a step closer towards the end of last week when an official from Limerick City and County Council spent most of a day in the area investigating the potential of a number of possible sites. We will now have to wait a number of months before the results of the preliminary research and testing are known.
Abbeyfeale Enterprise Expo has drawn huge attention from all kinds of businesses / Clubs / Organisations with only a limited number of Exhibit Tables remaining for the March 03 and 04 event. Rumour has it that a Humanist ‘Minister’ (?) has been invited to officiate but Mother Concepta has to be shielded from these new-fangled ways of tying the knot (not) so the night promises lots of drama, intrigue and colluding as the family of the bride strive to protect Grand Auntie from the realities of modern day marriage. GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL NEWS: On Bank Holiday Monday May 1 we hope to visit the Waterford Greenway again; all 46km/29miles of which will be open by then.

On Sunday, June 4, subject to sufficient interest, we will fly to Bristol and spend 4 nights in South West England; returning on the evening of Thursday, June 8. Visits to Powderham Castle, Exeter (home of the Courtenay family whose ancestors were landlords of Newcastle West), Agatha Christie’s home near Torquay, the Roman City of Bath, the bathing resort of Minehead and, of course, the historic City of Bristol will be on the itinerary. ANNIVERSARY OF FENIAN RISING: The 150th Commemorations will take place on the weekend of Sunday, March 5 in Ardagh. A visual history display will run all weekend in the hall. There will be an Irish Rambling House on the Saturday evening and then on Sunday the walk of the Fenians will be re enacted and followed by a Historical Fair which will include Cross Roads Dancing, Pony and Trap rides, Skittles, Horse Shoe Throwing, Pitch and Toss, Sheaf Tosssing and a mini food and craft market.
