CORN NA FEILE COURSING DANCE:  The annual coursing dance with dancing to the ever popular Joe O’Keeffe band will take place Saturday, January 9 from 9.30pm.     Admission €10.  Finger food will be served on the night.

AN INTERGRATED APPROACH TO PHOTOGRAPHY FOR BEGINNERS:  Professional photographer Marie Keating in association with West Limerick Mental Health Association is running a two hour course for amateur photographers in the Desmond Complex on Wednesday, January 13 from 7-9pm.  It must be pre booked so text Photography along with your name and number to 0857722475.  All participants must bring a camera with a manual function.

CONNIE HARNETT MEMORIAL SWIM:  They are a hardy bunch around Abbeyfeale when you see the crowd who turned out in such numbers for the second annual Connie Harnett Memorial Swim in Ballybunion on New Year’s Day.  This is a fundraiser organised by Connie’s wife and family in honour of the popular cattle dealer from Abbeyfeale who died in 2014. So far over €2,000 has been raised and will be divided between the Sagart Lourdes Fund, Nano Nagle Listowel and St Joseph’s Unit Listowel community hospital.

COMMUNITY ALERT: The following is downloaded from the Met Éireann website.  It’s called Be Winter Ready and contains Advice for the Elderly and their Families and Neighbours:  “In winter it can be difficult for everyone to get about and conduct day to day activities. It is even more difficult for the elderly and other vulnerable people.   Advice for the elderly or infirm:  Keep warm, eat well and avoid unnecessary travel. You should eat regular hot meals and drink plenty of fluids, this will keep you warm and will give you energy to keep active.  Ensure you have sufficient supplies of food and of any prescription medicine you may need. Keep active indoors.  Have sufficient fuel supplies to maintain adequate heating in your home. .Ask your relatives and neighbours for help if you need it. Keep their phone numbers on a list beside your phone. Personal Safety – Staying Safe: In icy weather, wear well-fitted shoes with non-slip soles if you have to go out but try to limit walking outside during the cold weather.  Consider wearing a personal alarm so that family or neighbours are alerted if you fall .If you have a fall, even a minor one, make sure you visit your doctor for a check-up. Fall prevention in your home.  Leave a low energy light on at night time, preferably one with a high light output. Use a non-slip shower or bath mat. Make sure wires or cords from lamps, telephones etc. do not trail where you walk.  Arrange furniture so that you can easily move around all your rooms.  Remove rugs or use non-slip tape or backing so rugs will not slip. Consider installing hand rails on both sides of the stairs.  Keeping an eye on the elderly and infirm:  Try to call on elderly relatives and neighbours, and offer to assist them in severe weather. Ensure that they have sufficient supplies of food and medications.   Ensure that they have sufficient fuel supplies to maintain adequate heating in their homes.  If you have any doubts about the safety of an elderly or infirm person seek the assistance of the Garda Síochána or local social services.

‘ST. ITA’S NIGHT:  The annual celebration in honour of St. Ita culminates with dancing in Raheenagh Hall on Friday, January 15.  A great night always with tea and sandwiches and goodies served.

PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR MEDIA RESEARCH PROJECT:  Memories of Growing Up with Popular Media.  What is the project about and who can participate?

When you look back on your life, do you have specific memories of watching, or listening to, or reading particular media, either regularly or occasionally? Examples might include certain films, or television or radio programmes, newspapers, magazines, comics etc.  Do you remember when and where you were, who you were with, what you thought or how you felt? When you remember these experiences, do you also think about what it was like growing up with your family, or in your neighbourhood? Do you remember specific events, and where and when you first heard about them through the media?  If you have answered “yes” to the questions above, would you be interested in taking part in a research project that will explore memories of growing up with popular media, focusing on how media consumption contributes to people’s sense of identity, individually and as members of social groups?

Who is conducting the research?

My name is Marcus Free and I am a lecturer in the Department of Media and Communication Studies at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

What is involved in participating in this project?

The project is seeking a wide range of people of different generations and social backgrounds. The only condition is that participants are aged 18 years or older. Interested participants would be asked to meet for a one-to-one conversational interview with the researcher at a convenient location, agreed upon in advance of the meeting. Where appropriate, the participant may be asked to meet for a follow-up interview if they are happy to do so. The participant’s involvement is entirely voluntary and they are free to leave the study at any time if they wish. The interviews will be recorded on an audio recording device and recordings will be strictly confidential and kept securely. Additionally, no real names will be used in transcripts of the interviews or in any subsequent publications.

Spring Break; April 24-27, 2016. We will be staying in the Cavan Crystal 4 star Hotel, Cavan. On our way up we will stop off in Longford to see St. Mel’s cathedral that was destroyed by fire 5 years ago and reopened last Christmas. We have a full and interesting itinerary, touring by day and dancing after dinner in our hotel. On Monday we will go to Armagh where we will visit the Roman Catholic Cathedral and the Church of Ireland Cathedral also we will go and see the Cardinal Tómas O’Fiaich Memorial Library. CENTENARY OF BIRTH OF ABBEYFEALE ARCHAEOLOGIST:  Editor of Mainster na Feile Nicholas Leonard reminds us;
“This year is the centenary of the birth of Brian O’Kelly- the Abbyfeale man who, among other achievements,  did such mighty work to excavate and restore Newngrange to its glory.  Anyway, there was a free public  lecture on Dec 6th in Meath to mark the centenary of O’Kelly’s birth in 1915.Sadly, he seems to be forgotten in Abbeyfeale, though he is one of our most celebrated archaeologists, and one of Abbeyfeale’s greatest achievers, with an international reputation and respect. There are still relatives of his in Abbeyfeale (O’Kelly’s School that was, etc). O’Kelly’s  ground-breaking (forgive the pun)  work is considered a ‘dead letter’-  now that scientists  are ‘excavating’rock samples in outer space! But O’Kelly’s work was,and is, every bit as important, and probably a lot more precious and valuable to the Irish people than any ‘ould scrap of space dust!’.”

COMMUNITY ALERT:  We are asked to keep a friendly eye out for our elderly neighbours in these dark dank days.  As you get older and I speak with the voice of authority (!) people are nervous of falling on ice or into potholes filled with water so they become confined to home and would really appreciate a friendly call to enquire if they’d like a bucket of turf brought in.  When driving it is much safer in these days of dark evenings and poor visibility to drive with dipped headlights.  Support After Crime Services is a voluntary service to people affected by crime founded in January 2006 by Sally Hanlon.  Its objectives are to benefit the community by maintain a free and confidential service where the issues of people affected by crime can be addressed with a view to resolution.   Contact details; 021 4320555 9.30am – 5.30pm or email info@supportaftercrimeservices.ie

.ABBEYFEALE FARMERS MARKET:  A big thank you to all our customers and we look forward to providing some of your Christmas provisions this December at our weekly Friday market in the Square.  We still have some Knocknagoshel honey for sale and this a staple that should be in every cupboard to help prevent colds and ‘flu’s.  Helga Henn will be in the Square on Wednesday, December 23 with a selection of locally grown, chemical free vegetables, free range eggs and Christmas marmalades to tide you over the Christmas season.

SUE RYDER:  As the temperatures drop you will still find a fantastic selection of coats and other winter clothing in our shop on the main street.  You will also find that perfect holiday read from our well stocked library, still only €1 per book.
Donations of clothing, shoes, bags and bric a brac are always welcome. At the moment we still have lots of customers looking for Christmas decorations so if you are replacing any this year, we would welcome the old ones.  Unfortunately we are unable to accept electrical items. Thank you for your continued support.

HOPE FOUNDATION FUNDRAISERS:  Five TY students are travelling to Calcutta in the spring with the Hope Foundation.  Fundraisers being organized by Cian Blair, son of Josie Foley and Bill Blair to help with the €3,100 that each student is expected to raise and which will be used to help children in desperate need in Calcutta include a Golf Classic on St. Stephen’s Day (December 26) at Newcastle West Golf Club and then two nights after Christmas, on December 27 a Trad night is planned for Fr. Casey’s GAA Clubhouse here in Abbeyfeale.  Cian’s father Bill is calling on all golfers, clubs and societies to please support the classic and any offers of help will be willingly accepted by Bill on 086 0768978.
